Step 1: catch up on all maintenance.
+ check the ECTS to see if it's brass - if not, replace it. Check the connector, too. (quick search will give you more info)
+ clean the throttlebody
+ plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, trans fluid change (and filter if an auto)
+ look it over & drive it a few days to see if anything else needs attention

Step 2: come back & let us know what you can afford to do.

Rule 3 (adding to PurdueGuy's list)):

Realize that a fool and his money are soon parted!

Take your time and deal with maintenance issues, then do some research on what works and what doesn't. These cars don't make a lot of power with easy bolt ons, and it would be easy to toss away a lot of cash on things that will no little to nothing for the performance of the car.

yea i wasnt planning on rushing in to this since i just got the car today, besides even if i wanted to spend an obscene amount of money i would prolly have to save over the course of many months. I do have a kid and bills, lol. so my money priorities go baby-> bills-> savings-> anything I might have missed-> then spending. according to how me and my wife have the monthly income planned we usually get about $200 a month, as long as the month had no surprises. Also I figured as much I wouldnt be able to just bolt anything on, but luckily I have quite a few friends who can help me and teach me how to do this this stuff. But yea Ill go make sure the cars in proper working order first.

One thing you need to think about is what you want the car to be:
+ show vs go
+ reliable vs all-out
+ handing and/or straight line power

Some people do things like gut their cars to drop the weight a lot, but if you need to haul your wife & child around in the car, that's not such a good idea most likely. Some people go all-out on performance, but have to fix the car regularly and can't rely soly on it to get where they need to go.

deffinately fast and reliable if i went cheap things would prolly not end well w/ my luck *thought bubble with car in ditch* lol, and sure as hell no gutting, she wouldnt let it get to that point anyway. Basically I'd prolly wanna start w/ things inside my $200 montly allowance, then much later start saving for the really expenseive stuff like new engines. My wife is aware of what im doing so she knows how much this is prolly going to cost, and luckily she dont care as long as it doesnt cut into her money or the bills and baby.

If its not a manual that really should be your first performance mod, after that a nice cold air intake is right in your 200 dollar a month category.

I would just do the maintenance for now and save the $200/month. Next spring, you'll have enough money for a 2nd S-series - get another early coupe for parts swappability

Pull the engine from the extra SC2 and rebuild it and put in a new clutch. Keep the rebuilt engine with the car that has the best interior/exterior and sell the other car - should be able to get close to, or even a bit more than you paid for it.

Depends on where you want to go. There is no point in spending money on mods if your final goal is forced induction, if its a N/A build and maybe some nitrous then you have options.

If you go N/A Nitrous Build:

Intake/Header/Exhaust 3 easiest.
Cams.

If you plan F/I Build:

Rebuild motor with forged internals, balance to 9000rpm, knife edge crank.
Cams.

Also set a horsepower goal and we can help you meet it.

Saturns are not quick in a straight line. Their strength is handling. First off, get a good set of tires. 205/50 15 is wider than stock, and slightly shorter, so your gearing will be a little more favorable. Might run about $250-$300. Your struts are probably shot, most people don't replace them when they should. A new set of those $200 on ebay, ST or KYB GR2. Springs will help with handling, and lower a bit more than an inch, but will make the ride harsher. A progressive rate spring will keep the ride close to stock comfort, but will lower a bit and improve handling a bit. Also around $200 on ebay. Oh yeah, front strut tower bar. $30 on ebay?

Most of all, change fluids, plugs, wires, all maintenance stuff. Buying a used car, you never know when regular service was performed. Plugs and wires, you don't need anything special. Copper NGK plugs, and OEM wires are fine.

You can get a short ram intake pretty cheap off of ebay, it will help your engine breathe a bit easier, probably won't add hp but you will feel the throttle response. If you have access to a dremel, you can open up the mouth of the throttle body, for better throttle response.

There are some free and cheap mods, just keep searching. Chopping a few inches off the shifter will make the throw shorter, and is usually free.

That does not make a "short throw shifter". That makes a short shifter. In order to make a short throw shifter you have to change the pivot point. There is some members send them your shifter they will make it a short throw for some cash.

You telling me a Saturn with 300whp that weighs 2400lbs isn't fast?
You telling me Low Saturns dragster that does 11s isn't fast?

It is a SC2 with 206K. I'd save my money.

Most things on the car are in need of service with those miles. You need to uderstand that you are going be asking a 206K mile car full of parts to do things they weren't designed to do. While you can do an intake and a few other minoir things that is probably about the end of reasonable things to do. I wouldn't do an exhaust, I'd probably set that bank budget to less than $500.

Bushings are dead/dieing. The engine is probably tired, transmission is probably not in the best shape either. The suspension probably needs gone through and the brake lines should probably be replaced. If you are wanting to make it quick and safe/reliable you have an uphill battle. That car itself may soldier on for 50-100K more miles driven conservitively, but we are talking about car that needs some attention to bring it into shape before you should think about doing anything serious.

Even as a daily though I'd insure that the oil, coolent, brake fliud and transmission fluid is fresh.

I'd shy away from putting money into modifying a car with that many miles.
