2004 ION Red Line
Default Possibly buying an 04 Redline

Woo, been awhile since i been here it seems.

Anyway, i'm possibly getting into an 04 Ion Redline because, sadly, my 97 SL2 bit the dust . Got hit backing out of my driveway back in August, and the hit totaled my poor baby (it had been in our family since new, so it wasn't easy; i did this when i drove away from it for the last time).

Since then i've been tempted by Subaru's, but i can't find an Outback that suits me (i wanted my turbocharged wagon, but it got away ). So now i've found an 04 Ion Redline at a dealership near me; salesman is bringing it out my way tomorrow.

Fingers crossed i will still be in the Saturn family after this week; i didn't realize the Redline's were supercharged until i read the wiki article on them...all of the sudden me likey

hope you find one you like, listen for clunks in the front end. they're fast with stage 2 equipment and a custom tune, using HPtuners or trifecta, whatever your flavor.

And if you hear any clunks, what would one do about that? Is it some sort of mount that's worn, or a bolts and nuts that have worked loose?

on these cars, a front end clunk most often means sway bar bushings, endlinks, or lower control arm bushings. less commonly it can be struts or the strut mount plate assembly.

So far just driving it has been the fun part; look forward to every journey i take, including my drive to work in the morning. Never had a four cylinder feel like a 6, but then again i've never owned a forced induction car before.

That being said, i'm not going to be too crazy with the mods; the car still has a warranty through the dealer, and i don't know what could void that (though i doubt some footwell LED lights, a shorter antenna, a grille, and a custom stereo would ).

I shall keep everyone posted now that my new ride is home and safely tucked in her space

and the GM stage II parts and tune installed by your nearest SATURN retailer will not void the warranty.

only things that damage other components will void your warranty, stage 2 as installed by a dealer will certainly not void it, and in actuality, a custom tune is as safe as a stage 2 one, but like my friend says, it looks like GM had a retarded monkey make the stock and stage tunes. the thing to keep in mind for warranties is to void a warranty, something you did has to cause the damage, and if you do it right you have nothing to worry about. oh, and of coarse, anything you add is not covered by your warranty.

Yeah a custom tune may be better, but unless the OP has the know how or knows someone that knows their way with HP tuners, it's best to just stick with stage 2. What does your friend know about either tune? Stage 2 is not that bad for a canned tuned except for being a little rich. GM done as a prevantative to keep things safe with the upgraded tune

first off, this friend safely tunes LSJs all the time, and only LSJs since he only knows LSJs well, he was properly taught how to tune through HPtuners, learning on his own car before messing with others. if you go through HP tuners, I definitely recommend going through someone who has done at least three cars like yours that are successfully still on the road. trifecta only has vince as a tuner currently, he has done a lot of ecotecs, he still stays within safe limits, and will customize a lot of things for you. vince at trifecta knows a lot, never claims he knows everything, but I trust the info if he tells it to me, since that's his very successful business.

As someone who has had the Stage II kit for a couple of years now, I can say that it adds a good amount of "fun factor" to the car.

And, "yes", mine is GM parts and Saturn Dealer installed. Mine was the first one done by Saturn of Daytona, so it took a little longer, but they still just charged me the 2.-something labor hours alotted by the service bible for that install.

A couple of things to be aware of:

1. The shift knob is only attached by having been pounded on at the factory. Unless the original owner added a set-screw or rigged it up some other way, there is a good chance it will eventually pop off, usually during a hard shift into second. here is a spring underneath the knob for the reverse lock-out collar, so the knob usually sails across the dash area when this happens. I have tried several fixes and my current fix seems to have worked pretty well. Remove the knob (if it hasn't popped off by itself), take out the spring (the reverse lock-out works just fine without it), then use a gel type superglue inside the knob and pound it back on. Mine has stayed put for about 6 months now and still seems solid.

2. The throttle body on the RLs tends to get gunked up faster than previous cars I have owned. If the car gets a little sluggish or the check engine light comes on for no obvious reason, that is one of the first things to check. Of course, getting the error code read will help, too.

Enjoy the ride, you have bought yourself a fun car!
