Default new tire recommendations?

I've started looking to get new tires for a '99 SL1 with OE Saturn 14" rims.

I've always bought Michelins, but they seem to be no longer making any 175/70/r14 size tires.

What would be your recommendations on good quality, readily available, not-too-costly tires?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I've put these tires on my 2006 Dodge Ram, my 2000 Buick Century, and I like them. Cheap, good wet and snow traction.

I'll be putting them on the sl2 this spring.

I put GT Radial Champiro Icepro 3's on my SL2 in November. I'll have to get something else when it gets warm out.

I've got the 15" rims, Though.

For $114 each, Walmart has the michelin defenders in a 185/70/r14 if you can fit it in.

Get the 185/65 14 Defenders. I've been running them for years. Saturn changed the 14" steel wheels to this tire size for the 3rd gen S series even though the wheel is the same size from 91-02.

What is the difference in circumference between a 175 and 185? It may be enough to change the accuracy of your odometer/speedometer?

If you drive mildly like myself, any tire they sell is good enough. The cheaper the better if you don’t care about the name embossed on the sidewall.

Here is what I use to figure how tires sizes may change things.

or do what I did and dump the 14's and pick up a set of used 15" steels and covers. So many more choices of tires.

+1 on General Altimax RT43. These are a top pick at Consumers Report. I bought a set last spring and have been pleased with them. Keep an eye on rebates. I would get 80-90k miles on the Michelin's I previously used. Last set were Defenders, and they just didn't seem to stay balanced. Fortunately, they were covered with lifetime balance at NTB.

+2 General Altimax RT43. I've ran them for a couple years now and I'm pretty happy with the performance and quietness.
