Default Life span of water pump.......?

So, my 1999 is 20 years old, and to my knowledge it has the original water pump. Am I playing with fire, or should I just get it changed...Is it possible the replacement one will not be as good as the original?

Brand recommendations?

regards,

Jason

My '99 went 204,067 or so. My '98 may or may not have the original, and it has nearly 175K.

They usually give some pretty good "tells" before they fail completely. Weeping coolant and/or a squeak noise. I wouldn't worry about it but do keep an awareness of it. There are some good replacements out there. I used Bosch when I replaced mine in the 2001 SL1. That was several years ago and the car had well over 350K km on it at the time.

This is why I try and post stuff on the What did you do . . . thread.
Easy reference for the dates, though I should try and remember adding mileage. I also documented in my notebook but those are inside the respective cars
  • On my '98 SL2, replaced the water pump Jan 2013 with a GMB from Advance Auto. Mileage would have been about 135k or so; still in the car which now has 201k miles
  • On my '02 SC2, just (end of September) replaced with Valucraft Serpentine Water Pump AVC-844 from Autozone (nobody else had anything in stock nearby); Car would have had about 145k miles

Both times, was made aware by coolant leaks.

Can guarantee new part will not last as long as the OE one... . Having said that, got 240,000 from original one, and now another 100,000 on the NAPA replacement.

Like to get Delco/GM replacements when possible, and NAPA when I can't. Always look for lifetime warranties, which I hope means something more than one with a 1-2 year replacement warranty.

Most times it is the same part in the box and they just surcharge to cover off any warranty replacements. Most owners will not keep the receipt, forget about the warranty or sell the vehicle before having to invoke the lifetime warranty.

I replaced my OEM one around 100K miles -- the bearing was making a racket and the pulley was wobbling slightly -- but no leaks.

Replacement was a $20 Gates unit (41024) on Amazon. Very close to the OEM design with good to better build quality.

But unless you're draining coolant anyway, for a thermostat swapout or radiator replacement, I'd just keep driving with the one you have unless it is kickin' up a fuss.

The water pump is usually not one of those "play with fire" parts. It usually starts leaking enough where you'd notice the smell, see the fluid, or at least see the coolant light come on.

That said I'm on my third one. OE changed at 120k, 2nd one changed at 240k or something. It is more of an eventuality type part though, so you could pick one up cheaper online if you plan in advance. I seems to always parts "right away" as there is no plan B for my ride, and end up going with whatever I can get from whatever store happens to be open.

I replaced the pump in my 2001 in 2016 at about 117,000 miles. When it went out, it just started leaking and didn't seize up or have any other kind of catastrophic failure, so it wasn't an emergency.
