Default Chmsl always on

Hello everyone,

My brake lights and CHMSL are always on. I'm wondering if it's a faulty brake pedal switch.

I’d think if it was brake switch all brake lights would stay on. But I have no idea why it would stay on.

You are probably correct and if you don't already have one, get a 10 dollar volt-ohmeter and check it out. The switch is 15 bucks on Rockauto.

Hi guys,

I was not completely accurate. Braking system lights (tail lights and CHMSL) are on only when the engine is on. Shut off the engine, key in off position and they function normally, ie, no lights, step on the brake pedal, lights go on. Fire up the engine and they light up again. This now makes me wonder, maybe it's not the switch? Perhaps the fuse box under the hood is damp?

Having said that, I saw on thread on a Vauxhall discussion board with the exact same problem and the culprit was the switch. Maybe it goes kooky sometimes?

I've never encountered this issue, but it would seem more like a switch problem than something in the fusebox.

As mentioned, both the switch and a voltmeter are cheap, there's even a couple of OEM AC Delco ones on eBay for about $30.

So here's the update. After contorting myself like a Cirque du Soleil acrobat and bonking my head repeatedly against the steering wheel, searching for the brake light switch, I found nothing. So, as a last resort, I looked in the underhood fuse box. There was a misplaced fuse. The two beige fuses on the top right should be side by side. Problem solved.

Some lighting mods were made, not by me. So here's my best guess, somewhere in the timeline, there must have been some fiddling and the fuse was misplaced. I had to go back to 1955 and insert the errant fuse in its proper slot to restore the timeline. OK, so I just watched Back To The Future II.
