2003 VUE 3.0L
Default No fuel or temp gauge and no high beam indicator

The car is an LS1 2001. With a scanner connected I'm able to read the signal from the fuel tank and coolant temp. I would think this means the computer is receiving this information. When I select the high beams they turn on but the indicator doesn't light. When I run a test on the instrument cluster, both gauges and high beam indicator work.

I don't have a schematic for this car to see if there is a common thread. Sounds like a communication problem. ECM, BCM, network wiring, connector?

I was expecting to either not be able to read the sensors values or not be able to control the gauges but I can with the scan tool.

Thoughts? Thanks

All indicators (except airbag and abs) and gauges are driven by the bcm. Airbag and abs have their own modules to indicate status. I'm not sure how a scantool can command gauges and indicators to turn on (whether from scantool or command from scantool to bcm). This presents an unusual problem. I have VCX NANO and have performed indicator tests to become familiar with this scantool but haven't encountered your problem.

I tend to think the scantool commands the bcm to turn on indicators and peg needles.

Does your scantool show any error codes (P, C, B, U)?

Saturnfans search and advanced search functions aren't as good as google. Surprisingly, when a recent thread presented a problem, I tried search and advanced search without success but google provided links to this forum for info I used to post a reply. It was for wiring diagrams. Perhaps if you try googling wiring diagrams for your '01 LS1, google may point back here.

My scan tools can command various modules and the instrument cluster is just a module. I suspect your BCM is not working properly, it is a common problem on our cars. You have tested the inputs and the cluster so the BCM is the in between.

2003 VUE 3.0L
Default Re: No fuel or temp gauge and no high beam indicator

Thanks for the reply's

To clarify, I'm using the LAUNCH to read the sensor data and actuate commands to test the instrument cluster. Yes, that test turns all the lights on and pegs the needles.

Since I'm able to read the sensor date it would seems this information is making it to the BCM (or is it going to the ECM) and since I'm able to test the instrument cluster, it seems the BCM is able to send that signal.

It would seem all the wiring and connectors between the module are good.

This is my mothers car and she lives 30 minutes away so this information is something I gathered last time I visited and had my LAUNCH with me. Does the signal from the fuel and temp go to the ECM which then transfers the information to the BCM for calculation or does it go straight to the BCM? I have wire schematics for my car which is a 2003 VUE (322,xxx miles so far) but not for her car.

My understanding is third generation Saturns using body control modules share similar (general) wiring configurations since all diagnostics equipment connect to the data link connector (DLC) communicating to the bcm via serial pin-2. CANBUS communications are a second form of communications via the DLC. If I can assume some things then using general wiring diagrams from your Vue can be applicable to the LS1. I referred to my '03 service manuals for DLC/bcm/instrument panel wiring and see the serial connection for a scantool inserted between the i/p and bcm. This would imply the signal from a scantool is bi-directional(?) suggesting specific signals from a scantool may be sent to the bcm or the i/p. This would tend to agree with 02 LW300's suggestion of a bcm issue along with several bcm failures in the L-series in these forums.

At best, either searching for wiring within these forums can turn up diagrams or subscribe to alldata.diy or Mitchell for online access to service manuals. Unfortunately the search and advanced search feature here isn't helpful (to me) but strangely, using google finds better answers pointing to Saturnfans threads than the search/advanced search feature.
