Default Braided ground strap...

I just installed an aftermarket stereo in my 05 ion2 and noticed there was a braided ground strap connected to the chassis of the factory deck... Anyone know the significance of this and do I need to figure out a way to reconnect it?

significance: it grounds the radio. yes, you need it, most radios have a ground stud to connect it to.

In every other vehicle I've dealt with, the antenna provided the ground... Then again, every other vehicle I dealt with wasn't made primarily of plastic... Thanks.

the plastic is just the cladding, and I've never seen a metal radio surround that is grounded to ground the radio. radios that are only grounded through the antenna often fail prematurely, especially aftermarket radios. I've put an aftermarket radio in a BMW 325e, ford sierra, chevy malibu, and ford taurus. they have since been in multiple chryslers, and my same two radios have been in service since 2006. every car has had a separate ground run.
