Default Replace/repair strut mount without alignment?

Is it possible to lower the strut enough to repair or replace the mount without actually disconnecting it from the knuckle (and needing a new alignment)?

I have KYB struts and mounts, new as of last summer, and the passenger side mount has started squealing quite significantly when turning at low speeds (like most aftermarket Saturn parts I've purchased recently, it's defective).

I can get the mount replaced under warranty, I believe, although that would probably be a pain because it's from tirerack (they may want me to pay for shipping to send the old one back, before they send me a new one, which would be highly inconvenient). I believe I saw a post a few months ago where someone was successful at disassembling and re-greasing a relatively new mount that was squeaking--any thoughts on that? How do I take it apart? What type of grease is best? Can I use regular automotive chassis/suspension grease (I have Mobil1 synthetic)?

Thanks!

You could take the entire knuckle off with with the strut still attached, although it would be a bit inconvenient and you would need a new axle nut.

Some just separate, don't know how KYB built theres. If you scribe the knuckle/strut mounting point you can reassemble without being out of alignment. Are you sure it is not one of the mount bolts rubbing on the cushion rib?

Yeah, I figured I could do that, but I was hoping for something easier/faster.

There's not enough room to slide the mount out, when it is separated from the strut (with the strut still in place)?

I guess that's what I'll do. I've done it before, but I always worry that it won't be perfect. Any reason to use a scribe over spray paint?

I'm not sure what you mean about the bolts, could you explain that a bit more...? It didn't make any noise for the first 10 months... just started the other day.
