Default Poor Fuel Economy

Some of us with S-series cars are having an ongoing problem with bad fuel economy. The values are often well below ratings. No amount of component replacement seems to have an effect. I'm curious as to whether a particular engine model/configuration is more prone to this than another. I don't know if this will lead any where.
