Possibly a vacuum leak. Could be the intake manifold gasket. Was the idle screw tampered with? Check engine light on?

First things first. Validate your ECTS is working as it should and only then start digging into other possible solutions.

1) Idle your car in the driveway and make sure the fan comes on automatically somewhere between 1/2 and 5/8. It should not take longer than 30 minutes for this to happen. When you hear the fan come on, validate temp drop is about 1/8 of the gauge.

2) If you pass test #1, go to your parts store and ask them to read your cars computer fault codes and report them back here.

3) if no codes have been set, I would buy a new ERG gasket ($2 just in case) and clean the ERG as demonstrated in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt5lRTt6BsU

Then try the car again. If the issue is not fixed then try this temporary test to see if the problem goes away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YRq2...e=channel_page

Report back what you find.

if its 2000 sl and you never changed it change it now because it has the plastic tip if cracks you will experience the high idle also when changing it check the connector for corrosion mine had the same problem and its 2001 sl. if its the egr you will get a code or when the car gets hot and you stop or shut the car and try to start it will start then die that the symptom of an egr

Um, it's EGR, and unless there's also a performance problem, there's no point in risking INTRODUCING a vacuum leak by removing it. PRIME suspect for high idle on a gen-3 SOHC like yours is an intake manifold gasket failure, creating a vacuum leak. Test - start the engine, and while the idle is racing, spray brake cleaner or carb cleaner or the like along the mating edge between the intake manifold and cylinder head, esp. around the #1 runner. If idle changes, that indicates gasket has failed and that's the likely cause of the racing idle.

after you spray around the intake if the rpm doesn`t change then replaces the ects its easy just be careful do not tighten it all the way in like i did or you will crack the brass tip
