2004 ION-2 Quad Coupe
Default 3rd gear has me down

My 3rd gear grinds forna split second during shifts. Its still easy to engage and stays in, am i looking at replacing/rebuilding the transmission? Or would something else cause it? 3rd gear is the only one so would that rule out clutch? Im still new to Saturns so advice from a seasond owner would be appreciated

Original owner or bought used? Mileage? Manual xmissions are usually bullet proof while the clutch, master and slave hydraulics wear out and gives symptoms of xmission problems.

Bought used a week ago. Has like 207k how had is the slave cylinder to replace?

At 207k miles, this car is well used. Maybe replacing the xmission fluid (Dexron III) will help before considering a worn clutch or hydraulics. The clutch slave unit comes off when the xmission is separated from the engine. I don't know if Ion manuals wear out the same way as any other car but its usually recommended to replace clutch and hydraulics all at the same time with high mileage and not piece meal since replacing a slave means bleeding the system and repeating it again if the master is replaced at a later time. When considering replacing a clutch, once the xmission is separated, replacing hydraulics makes sense instead of revisiting this point later when hydraulics fail after replacing a clutch.

I will give those a read tonight but just quick skiming i see the word "clash" is that the same thing as grinding?

well the car passed the static and dynamic shift tests. ill try the fluid change and go from there

ok to update everyone: i drained the old fluid (was kinda brown) and replaced with 1.5 qts of Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc and half qt of Lucus transmission additive to thicken it up

3rd gear still grinds going in but at lower speeds (2000 RPMs) she engages nice and quiet. am i gonna be looking at a trans rebuild/replace in the future?

Probably the blocker ring for third gear is shot. I would try looking for a used transaxle but the manuals may be hard to come by. Parts are probably still available to rebuild if you go that route.
