Default Rear Disc Conversion

Converting "The Bucket" to rear disc brakes. Was looking through Saturn's parts catalouge to make sure all my bases were covered and saw that there are two master cylinders for models with and without rear disc brakes. However SPS says the swap isn't needed ("all you need is in our kit")

My question is do I need a new master cylinder? The car is non-ABS.

all models with rear disc had ABS/trac...

all models without rear disc lacked ABS (pre 99).

The other master cyl will work fine as the proper brake bias is tuned into the rear calipers (based on their piston volume and such). Saturn won't have the non ABS master cyl listed as a "rear disc" one tho as it never was such in OEM fashon.

My newly-disc-ed 99 is running on the old, non-ABS master cylinder. Brake feel and performance are EXEMPLARY.

Listen to SPS, they know what they are talking about...

"My question is do I need a new master cylinder?"
the answer is No. the non-rear disc master cylinder works fine with rear disc conversions.

I hope you aren't going to seriously pay that much (SPS, $799 or whatever it is) for the conversion.... are you? I paid less than $200 for my whole setup, with new pads + rotors -- and I paid someone else to pull them for me (time constraints, otherwise I would've loved to have saved that $30-40).

Yeah, but it was probably worth it in the long run.

I believe all rear disc equipped Saturns had ABS.

Oh no I'm not paying $800, I have a 1992 SC parts car that will donate it's brakes, I was just checking on the master cylinder to make sure I had all the parts I needed to hook everything up.

And yes I have already planned for the wheelbase differences!!!

my post is off topic a little bit, but I saw no point in starting another thread with the same name on the same topic. Here's my question - would it be possible to do a rear disc conversion on my 03 L200? There are no kits on the market made specifically for my car. I think that rear discs may have been an option (or even standard for some years) so the parts may be out there.

Find an L200 with rear discs. Steal them.

Or if you do things legally, find a junked one, then steal em.

Ha! So it can be done is the answer??? I'll have to read some of the other posts to see how to do a conversion and how much work goes into it.

swzine,

Rear discs are standard and some model year L200s so parts should be pretty available. I'd assume it will be about the same process as my SL swap. All you need to do is swap equipment, run your lines, etc. It's just a matter of buying parts or finding a donor car.

you are mistaken. saturn never offered rear discs without abs. if they did i would have gotten my 92 sc like that and saved myself the fun of converting mine.

Thanks for the input man. I'd love to get som discs on the back. What I really wish is that I could add ABS, but I think that's pushing the envelope a little too far!!!

eRic,

Ah yes you are correct, I didn't think my donor car for brakes had abs but on further inspection it does. Oh well not the first time I've been wrong.....

Well it is better than the offer I recieved the other week,

Trade 1974 Firebird with 97,000, payments for another $15,000.
(by the way my car was appraised at $75-80K last spring).

But sorry think I'll still have to pass......

I've seen this topic pop up several times and I never get a round to asking if someone out there is willing to help me out. I dont want to pay for the overpriced SPS kit, but I dont have the time to search the local junk yards searching for the "Do-It-Your-Self kit". So my Questions are:

1. Is anyone in the Colorado Springs area that knows where I can get it?

2. Or if anyone is visiting their junk yard and is willing to hook me up with one?

My car is a 98 SC2. Any help here would be apricated, just pm me.
