Default Brake lights working intermittently

I noticed tonight that my brake lights are not coming everytime. Also, when I try to shift out of park, I have to hit the brake pedal 3 or 4 times before the switch in the shifter "clicks" and I can pull it out. This started within the last two days. I assume the root cause of both of these is the switch/sensor on the brake pedal. My questions are where is it, how do I replace it & how much does it cost?

TIA.

You may not need to repalce it. It may just need to be adjusted. Get under the dash and have a look to see if that is the case. Something may be bent or perhaps the switch has moved inits mount and is out of adjustment.

What year is the car?

I crawled under and looked at it, the switch is aligned propely, however when I push the pedal in the switch is making a popping sound, must be shorted out.

Off to Saturn tommorow I guess

Is the "plunger" going in and out normally? Are you seeing any arcing / sparking when it pops? If it's "shorting", you'd have the opposite effect, that is, the brake lights would be on when you aren't pressing the pedal. Maybe the contacts inside the switch are just shot, or corroded (which, in all likelihood, means new switch time anyway). Look also for any external short, that is, any place where either wire could be contacting a ground outside the switch. Deal with that first.

If it is the switch, I would think you could find an aftermarket. Can't say for sure, but it doesn't seem to be the kind of part that, quality-wise, would compel you to go OEM (like with, say, a PCV valve).

It is moving in and out smoothly & with the pedal. I'm going to try and follow the wires today, thats not the easiest place to work.
