Default Self install of Saturn L300 ECM

I have found some Saturn L series ECM's available for my 3.0L V6.

Are these units plug and play? Is there a special callibration process?

ECM's should be plug and play. There is some calibration, but the ECM is zero'd when power is removed and the calibration is done by the ECM while driving.
If ya come across a good deal on BCM's, let me know. I'm in need of one!

The dealer tells me it needs to be programmed and callibrated by them, but they will do the install. Is there any truth to this?

From what I've observed, the ECM is completely and totally blank. It's a computer without an operating system. No OS, no program. Saturn has the software to program it and no one else has it. That's all that I know.

Okay, thats what they told me at the dealer...so i trust that they are not making it up

I went ahead and bought it online. It states that it is brand new, and never used. Comes in static bag. It was a complete steal...worse case is im out a few bucks.

If it is a brand new one that has never been in a car and ran the engine it will need to be programmed by Saturn.
I don't know off hand if a used one from a car with the exact same engine and options would run the engine or not. With out looking into the service manual I suspect that it would but there is also a good chance that it will pop codes. There may be an incompatablitly between it and the other modules with it having a different VIN (serial number) than the other modules.

After you do the passlock deal it will run a diffrent car if it is a used unit. I have swapped them from lot cars to a customer car to just verify what i concluded it diag. I dont remember if codes pop up though.

The dealer is schedule to install this ECM as soon as it comes in. I bought it for $41.00. Compared to the $500-$600 unit sitting in Saturn parts, that is a nice price.

Dealer installed this Ebay ECM (they must have agreed it was new, as they do not install junk yard ECMs). Works great. This was $130 for installation and software.
