Whatever.....

As far as platforms go, sure, but they'll be about as badge engineered as the Honda Civic / Acura RSX are.

Are the Ion and Cobalt the same car? Are the Vue, Equinox, and Torrent the same car? Are the Sky and Solstice the same car? Anyone with at least ONE working eye would agree they are not. Are these cars on the same platforms? Yes. Do they share a great deal of mechanical parts? Yes! Does that save US money, at purchase and in maintenance? YES!!! That's the whole idea!!! How is this so hard for people to get past? Just because a car isn't started from scratch for that specific model doesn't mean it's "all the same car".

OTOH, the minivans are rubber-stamp copies of each other, but that seems to be the exception, rather than the rule, for GM and it's "platform sharing" theme that seems to be the plan for the future of GM.

You can make a much, much, much more fuel efficent vehicle with a V8 now than you could in the 80's. Cylinder deactivation is much better understood now. The engines themselves are just more efficent all around, since trash-can sized cylinders are not the only way to make power anymore.

Look at the Hemi. Those things sell like hotcakes. GM's problem isn't promoting cars that aren't fuel efficent, it's trying to sell cars that no one is willing to pay a little bit more at the pump or a little bit more at the dealership to own/buy. Make a great car, and people will buy it, even if it's going to cost them more to own.
