Default Front End 'Growl" When Turning Right -- Mount?

Hello,

1995 Saturn SL (manual 5 speed) 175,000 mis.

I am back again. Been a while since I had almost exasperated myself trying to figure out hesitation in my vehicle only to discover it was faulty plugs. Ugh.

Now the problem is a 'growling' sound (almost like something is rubbing against something else) when turning right.

I don't think it is a wheel bearing. The sound disappears with the engine off and coasting in neutral while turning right.

I suspect an engine mount or transmission mount.

Within the last two years I have replaced the clutch. (at 160,000 mis).

I haven't had a whole lot of time to do any type of inspection, so this is my first 'ignorant' post to the board.

Questions I have are: How many engine mounts does the vehicle have? How many transmission mounts?

That's really the initial questions I have.

On last inspection by a certified auto inspector, Jan. 2017, I was told that the top left engine mount was actually starting to 'fail' upon a visual.

Could it be that simple? Replace that particular part and drive on off into Saturn bliss?

Maybe, but first I wanted to get some expert feedback from the board members.

Other symptoms are: it seems to be worse at startup and when the engine is cold.

Also, the other day after leaving work I started off and when I reached about 45mph and shifted in 5th gear the whole car felt like it was struggling to maintain power and starting shaking.

I decided to skip the interstate and take the back roads. I made it home fine without any other problems, but the car has been sitting in the driveway since, and with the colder weather arriving here in Virginia, I am sure the symptom will only get worse.

Thanks!~

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Your Saturn engine has four mounts:
1. Torque axis mount (upper mount). This is the one at the passenger end of the engine, visible from above.
2. Transaxle mount. Under the transaxle.
3. Upper Dogbone. Under the air filter box, more or less.
4. Lower Dogbone. Visible through the right front wheel well with the splash shield removed.

Lots of photos on this site showing what good and bad ones look like.

Another potential source of the noise is the intermediate bearing on the passenger side driveshaft.

thanks for the diagram/photos and the answers to my initial questions.

at this point i need to get my son in law (uncertified mechanic) to hop in the car and listen to the symptom and then hopefully get it up on a lift at his shop this weekend.

i had a delay in reply as my wife hit a deer the other night in another car. basically left it unroadworthy, now dealing with insurance. wish me luck. appraiser today seemed like they were going to do the bare minimum...as always.

^^ what type vehicle, and what was broken?
Many insurance companies will let you buy it back from them for scrap value....on my last "deer connection", I did not even contact insurance, just replaced the damaged parts myself using Ebay purchases for the prepainted/sealed fender and a set of upgraded headlight assembly's.
Got it done for less than $350 and looks great (if you ignore the slight hood dent where an antler hit).
