Default 1996 SW2 Backup Camera ?

Now that many Universal Backup Cameras are selling for $30 or less complete on Amazon and eBay, I'm seriously considering popping one onto my old SW2.

I'm leaning towards a separate Monitor, mounted into/onto the central upper dash, fastened with double-backed tape into the shallow well that is present on the dashboard there.

(I don't trust the units that replace the stock Rear View Mirror.)

I'm leaning towards a WIRED vs wireless unit because I expect a wired unit would be more reliable, and running the wire alongside the headliner in the corner should be simple (I think).

Anyone else do this ?

Advise ?

Recommendations ?

I bought one for my airplane - wired and separate monitor like you discussed. Not to back up, but to see the fuel tank and markings for fuel level. Not installed yet but I have played with it in the basement. It is a neat little unit and I think it would work great in your Saturn. I'd like to put one on my Dodge truck, would make backing up to the trailer a snap.

If I find a cheap one that works, I will buy a spare to rig up to use just to check BRAKE and BACK-UP lights.

I'll rig it to run off the Cigarette Lighter, and to be always on.

Hack it to a cheap tripod, and place it behind the vehicle when I wish to check.

I don't know if that is a good idea . . . the F5 issue is a real thing

I'd be tempted to run the wire from the trunk under the rear seats, under the carpet to the center console tunnel, then up to the bin.

You may want to check out the folks using cheap tablets in that position, might be able to do something with those cameras

A good use for an older smart phone.
Wifi works without a phone contract.
Use a wifi camera in back and hotspot your phone so you can get navigation on the old one.

The Cigarette Lighter suggestion was only for a spare camera I could use to check Backup Lights, etc.

Maybe even pop it onto a Selfie-Stick (or whatever) to stick under the car to check Exhaust, Brakes, etc.

I see no need for an On/Off Switch as I'd plug it in to use, remove it when done.

Why not a new Smart Phone ?

Do old ones have features the new ones lack that I would need ?

(I have a recent Android)

"new" smart phones are expensive and contain features you don't need while "old" smart phones are a dime a dozen; my Nokia/Microsoft Lumia 630 was only $40 but has decent free GPS, decent MP3 player and had a better camera than my $100ish dedicated cameras until the lens spent too much time in my pocket.
8+ hrs on 1 charge while playing music and displaying an eBook isn't too shabby either.

I was considering this *wireless* option (that is; until i saw the price tag). Youch! Still a VERY innovative product - for '96 and later cars. I can only hope that market (i.e.; high demand will drive down the cost).

Just purchased a new stereo double din touch screen, and it came with a Camera but I would have to cut a hole to install the camera (1-1/4") so I bought a Camera that is also a licence plate frame, works great, spent for under $150us

Would you have had to cut a hole in Plastic or Metal ?
