2005 VUE 2.2L
Default 2005 Vue Bouncing Speedometer

I just had the engine replaced in my manual transmission 2005 Saturn Vue. Last week I experienced periodic failure to my power steering, and then periodic power loss. After inspection my friend and I found that the ground wire by the fuse box was not properly tightened. Tightening the nut down solved that problem.

The problem I bring to you today and the reason I finally made a profile here is that now the speedometer will bounce erratically and at high speeds and starting from a stopped position the acceleration will jump as if from poor shifting.

I looked up the problem and found most people suggested replacing the speed sensor. I have just done that but the problem still is there.

TL;DR: Manual transmission, speedometer bounces from 40 -130 while driving and sometimes while stopped in neutral, acceleration jumpy at high speeds and while going from stop. Replaced VSS, did not fix problem.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

If I were troubleshooting I'd use code reader/scanner compatible with Vue (must be able to read KWP) and monitor MPH at the OBDII port under dash.

If speed readings are stable it probably mean VSS to ECM wiring is OK and ECM is able to process the information. The ECM passes speed signal to BCM which then feeds to instrument panel cluster (IPC).

I'd also monitor the IPC odometer and if mileage appears to be recording normally it probably indicates the VSS, ECM, BCM, IPC path is good but problem is within the speedometer needle driving circuits.

However, if MPH reading at OBDII is also jumpy I'd suspect VSS, VSS to ECM wiring or perhaps internal ECM problem.

I've attach simple wiring diagram of VSS to ECM wiring ... looks like a single purple/white wire and IIRC at least one DIY'er pinched the feed wire to ground during a clutch change ... you may want to check that.

To continue, you probably transplanted your original ECM to the new engine so make sure the ECM external ground wire is present and connected to one of 4 bolts holding ECM to engine block.

Finally, are you saying that the engine throttle - will at times - try to add speed without input from you?

If yes - this indicates electronic throttle control system has a flaw of some sort. The VSS input to ECM is in play if the cruise control is turned on and a preset speed level is selected. You could post more information about the uncommanded acceleration.

You need to look at a couple more grounds. Look at this link, I had similar problems with speedometer.
