Happy 2003 Saturn Vue trouble going uphill, around curves

Hello! I'm new here, so forgive me for any transgressions.

My 2003 Saturn Vue 4cyl. 2WD has struggled to go uphill for a couple weeks now. The RPM gauge will shoot up and my car will decrease in speed no matter how fast I'm going (which usually isn't that fast, 35-40 mph). If I attempt to accelerate, the RPM will shoot up again, and eventually my "Check Engine" light and my "Reduced Power Mode" light will come on. The "Reduced Power" light will go off if I pull over, turn the car off, then crank it back up after 30 seconds. The "Check Engine" light will stay on for about a day, then go off.

I asked my friend (who's great with cars) what he thought; he said it was most likely a sensor but could also be the transmission.

I'm taking the car to a shop next week, and was wondering if anyone here had any ideas as to what could be going on with my car, so I don't come off as a complete dummy. 😀

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I'd check the transmission fluid first off.

Welcome Wyatt. Sorry to tell you, but you are experiencing the demise of yet another VTi tranny.

Well, that's a shame. I was hoping it wasn't that. Thanks for the heads-up.

This is the most common swap if you can DIY, but probably not worth having someone do it for you . . .
