2003 ION-1 Sedan
Default Roof Racks

I'm trying to install a roof rack on my Ion-1 so I can take my bike places. I've tried looking online, but all that stuff is way over my head. What all would I need to get started?

I went thru the same scenario attempting to re-purpose old ski racks that clamped onto older cars with drip rails. Since most cars eliminated drip rails, I simply removed the end clamps, drilled holes and mounted them onto existing luggage racks; the same set went on a Mercury Sable wagon with luggage racks and now on my L300 with factory luggage racks. The key to carrying things on vehicle roofs is the basic luggage rack with clamps customized for the upper door frame. The clamps designed to match the contours of the door/roof frame are then connected to the cross frame support, becoming a luggage rack. The standard aftermarket roof racks from Thule and others already knows this and builds their expensive racks with adapters to accommodate almost anything that can be carried on vehicle roofs. I simply adapted to existing luggage racks to fit old ski racks onto them.

I would start by looking at the yakima website. They have a simple set by set guide to match up the type of roof (railed/naked/etc) with the type of rack purpose you intend. I use a "Q tower" yakima rack system. They are rebuild-able (can adapt to other cars) which is what I did. It was originally intended for a 99' A4. I simply found what "Q clips" the saturn needed and just purchased those to avoid buying a complete rack system which can run around ~$350.

I would try to find a used rack then just rebuild to the car you have! Good Luck!
