Default Throttle body problem?

This is actually on a friends 2000 buick century. Didnt feel like making an account on a new random forum. Hope someone can still help

Anyways. The car half the time will start but then die suddenly. I noticed the cruice control cable bracket is busted just enough for it to dit on but fall off easily. And oddly if you can get it to sit in the car starts up. I believe its due to the cruise control cable being tighter and actually opening the vavle alowing enough air in when "closed" for the car to ideal. And if itfalls offthe car will die, but only sometimes.

Do you think its just the TB causing the problem and cleaning it out with carb cleaner will be a cheep fix or is it more like a failing spring or sensor or something else.

Unfortunatly no chance to get any codes read yet being to scared to get stranded at a red light.

If cruise control is suspected of interfering with starting and engine running, you have several options. Disconnect the 10 amp CRUISE fuse and disconnect the cable between the cruise control module and throttle. Removing the cruise control fuse disables power but disconnecting the cable from the cruise control module to throttle separates a physical connection between the cc module and throttle. This should allow fault isolation determine whether or not starting is being interfered with by the cruise control system or a different problem exists.

Ok

But i was thinking the cable itself when connected to the throttle pulls it open a bit more when deattched. But when removed throttle closes all the way and the. Refuses to fully start and sputtering out. Sonim going to try cleaning throlle put first indont know how to diagnose if its the spring or cable otherwise

As if the tightness of the cruise control cable is preventing it from getting stuck fully closed is what im thinking.

Cruise control is a secondary function and should never pull throttle open when cc is OFF, broken, whatever. Throttle control is between the gas pedal and throttle body. CC is never a priority to control throttle position when its not used. The cc cable should never pull throttle open unless cc is ON and SET, using cc as a secondary means of throttle control. If the cc cable is tight without any slack, something is wrong and preventing throttle from closing to normal idle settings. Be aware, if some part of cc is broken like the bracket holding the cc module, you may have a safety issue that may cause unintended consequences like an engine runaway. Disconnecting power to cc and cable to throttle ensures you are the only one to control throttle position, not cruise control.

Looks like someone once put a fully closed ziptie on the end of the cc cable causing it to not return to fully closed position. However for some reason the car only wants to start when the throttle is slightly opened.

With this new info and using service manual references, I'm guessing whoever meddled with this cruise control and throttle linkages made a band aid repair instead of repairing whatever broke. You can post pictures of this misaligned and poorly made repair to use the cc cable to prop open throttle. This explains the mystery in your initial descriptions.

Throttle body assemblies sometimes have a throttle stop screw (covered or exposed) initially set at factory assembly for idle speed. This means the throttle plate is never fully closed but adjusted to a slight opening. Electronics takes over, using the idle air control valve and a bypass air port in front of the throttle body to allow electronics of the EFI system to make all idle speed adjustments. The initial factory set throttle opening is a mechanical setup with the EFI system using this adjustment to make all (and higher) idle adjustments.

If you find the throttle plate is closed after disconnecting the cc cable/zip tie band aid setup, you would confirm someone making incorrect adjustments to the factory set throttle stop screw. There may be other issues not revealed........

Awesome. Dont have car at the moment ill try tighting screw to where it sits when cc is conected tomorrow and clean out throttle too.

Ill also be able to get codes looked at and see if theres a throttle position sensor code.

finally got around to checking codes, looks like theres a P0410 secondary air injection system malfunction. And a P0440 EVAP emission control malfuc.

I adjustd the throttle a bit more open and now it sems to start everytime now. Though not sure if correct fix

Without specific rpm specs, an automatic V6 will probably idle between 500-900 rpm in Drive. 600-800 rpm may be factory settings after a full engine warm-up. Any info from the owner's manual?

whelp it was working fine, but now died and doest want to go above 1st gear. So she says. I get a chance to look at it again tomorrow and see if any vacumme lines came unplugged or missed a sensor connection.

Main issue ended up being idle control valve. Weird that no error codes for it were thrown. Made it so frustrating!

Also the 2000 buick century doesnt have the rpms on the dash or anywhere for that matter. Didnt help at all.
