Wrench Oh boy....

I bought my Saturn used obviously (its a 2005 ion 2 5 speed) and ive only owned it for 4 months but now I've run into a few problems I was hoping someone could help me with. My mechanic doesn't work on weekends and I won't be able to stop in until Wednesday so I was hoping to just get an idea of what it might be.

Yesterday my car started grinding and it sounds like something is dragging under my car but its only in first to second gear and then after that it disappears. I was thinking a gear box? Also when it idles I can hear a weird sort of hum that is every 2 ish seconds.

Is it okay to still drive my car for school and leisure or should I just drive it strictly to school and work? Thanks guys!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Update: I just noticed its when I steer, would it be the rotor shield grinding?

It could be wheel bearings. They have to bear the load of driving and turning at the same time.

I took off the wheel yesterday and the rotor shield is fine. Stupid question but do I need to get the wheel barrings fixed right away? I'm in college and it's my daily.

If those bearing fail at speed you may lose a tire. Not a good situation to be in! I had a similar issue on my old SHO and by the time I got it to a shop they were wrecked. Luckily it was replaceable and afterwards it drove like a dream.

It may wear the tires, but the days of the rim fall off of the car are largely behind us. I've seen chryslers do it, but never seen a gm do it. I've had 6 gm wheel bearings go, one right before a road trip, and they've never done anything but grumble.

In da U.P., everything's a road trip.

Yeah, that 400 mile trip to the grocery store was rough with the wheel bearing grumbling.
