Default Ion radio issues

So I just bought a 2004 ion. The radio says "err" when the car is started. After that I can select any radio station, am/fm and everything on the deck seems to work, but NO SOUND, no static, nothing. Kind of sounds like there is a noise coming from the trunk, but it is faint and not a radio noise.

According to the previous owner, it was working recently and just stopped. I am not above putting in a cheap aftermarket deck if I know it will solve the problem, but I am thinking its something other than the deck since it appears that the functions seem to be working.

Thank you in advance for any insight on this issue

Well I just put in a new deck and it solved the problem. Wish I would have been able to avoid it, but my daily commute would be very long without some tunes so I needed to fix it today.
