Dizzy Fuel Gauge not working on 1998 SC-2

I just recently got a 1998 Saturn SC-2 Coupe with 1.9L, 5sp. My problem is that the fuel gauge is not working. It stays on E and the low fuel light stays on. I have typed in the search on yahoo many different ways and I come up with a range of all kinds of it may be this and it may be that. I found this forum and have read a few of this threads. I can't afford to take it to a mechanic and I am more of a DIY type person. I am just trying to figure out where to start and what maybe the cause of it. If anybody has any ideas, please help me. I am just now getting back on my feet from a divorce and got a new job, which I drive 25 miles one way to work, I need to figure this out so that I don't run out of gas on the way to work.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Go into my photo gallery and locate the schematic of the fuel system and then locate the level sender to the PCM on the schematic. The connector is on the left side of the trunk. disconnect the battery negative to prevent accidents and then check the resistance of the sender element. with about a half tank of gas you can bounce the car and get a change in resistance if the sender is functioning. Once you get some numbers from the sender post back here and what to fix or do next will be forthcoming. Normal resistance of the sender is in the 700 at E to 20 at F range.

In the interim, reset your trip odo every time you fill up. And make sure not to go passed 200 miles before filling it back up again.

I didn't get any resistance from either side of plug. I am thinking my fuel sending unit is bad, but I really don't know what else it could be. I guess I will do what was suggested and not let tripmeter get over 200 miles before filling it up. I just can't afford a new fuel pump right now. they start at 189.99 at the stores, but that includes everything.

The only cheap way out would be to get a junkyard pull your own part sender or pump assembly. Pulling out the tank is not fun but would give you good practice before you do your own.

Carter makes a good pump only and a junk yard pick a part from a 98 or newer car will get you the rest of the parts you need. http://www.rockauto.com for low cost parts.
