1998 SL1
Default SOHC to DOHC swap

I have a 1998 Saturn SL2, 5 speed manual, and a SOHC engine. The local junk yard has a 98 Saturn SL2 dohc, automatic, and I want to swap the engines (and needed accessories).

I need help. What all do I need to do this swap successfully? The engine, computers, gauge cluster, wire harnesses, transmission...what else am I missing? Also, about the transmission, I know that the manual transmission I have will work fine for the switch, but should I just take the auto transmission as well?

Please and thank you, and sorry if this was already a thread.

Default Re: SOHC to DOHC swap

Keep the original tranny, the SOHC gears are taller than the DOHC, and the manual is better than the Auto.

Just a shade tree mechanic, but I would grab the head, speedo cluster, rear disc brakes if present, fog lights, and rims if 15" and you have 14".

Head should include fuel rail, injectors, etc...

Anyone want to chime in on the PCM, and ABS modules?

Cruise control?

if your getting the whole motor then all you have to do is take your sohc motor out and install your dohc motor. everything will bolt up and plug in as long as its the same year model.

the pcm will be alright unless you plan on turning the dohc over 6000 on the tach then you will need the dohc pcm. just recently found that out after converting my sohc sl to a dohc for the circle track

Or just do it the right way first and get a 92 header to put on while you are doing the swap

Wiring harness will be the same. Since your car was born with a DOHC, does it presently have the DOHC cluster? Does it have an MP3 transmission?

There's only one "computer". The PCM from the donor car will technically run the engine in your car, but without a transmission to communicate with, it will set a perpetual SES light. You need a DOHC manual PCM. Did you buy your car with the SOHC engine or did you swap it yourself? If you swapped it, would you still have the original PCM? That one would work.

As to which transmission to use, the REAL question is whether you want to DRIVE an automatic or manual. The experience is COMPLETELY different, and that's what drives (no pun intended) the decision. If you choose to swap to the automatic, there's a lot more you need - brake pedal, shifter and cable, you'd def. want the donor PCM in that case. The wiring IS different between manual and automatic.

Not so much if you have either an air/electric ratchet or ratcheting wrench for the nut that holds the bolt that the pedals swing from AND take the automatic harness from the PCM and fusebox from the JY car.

After the only time I've taken the harness too, I felt stupid for never having done it before....so freaking annoying unbolting/unclipping everything from the engine with the engine in when you just need to undo 6 10mm bolts holding the top of the fender on and pull the harness through...

...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

I want my car to stay manual.
