Default 1996 SL1 Steering Rack: Power & Manual same part??

Howdy--

I need to replace the steering rack/pinion in my 1996 SL1 (Manaul Steering), and the guys at autozone are telling me that Part # 64113 on their website (sorry, I can't post actual links here yet) will work. It's listed as a power steering rack though. Are the power and manual racks indeed the same part for my car??? Doesn't sound right to me.

Thanks a bunch, and have a great day.

You might be confusing them by giving them the wrong model number/name, the steering rack is about the only thing where the difference between SL and SL1 truly matter. You have a SL, not a SL1.

You need AZ part number 6878 for the least amount of headache's.
#64113 will bolt to everything except the steering column just fine, and you'll have to either re-rebuild it to be a manual rack, add a PS pump, bracket & belt, or pour enough ATF into the rack and a custom loop-able line to fill it for proper lubrication. To make it fit onto the column you'll have to find (in a junkyard) the U-Joint connecting the two, they are different on the rack side and not swappable.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Interesting that the manual steering parts are more expensive then the power steering. Supply and demand I guess.

Well heck, it is an SL. That was probably the hitch. Thanks for straightening me out. I'll go ahead and get the correct part and just get things done. The price difference really is nuts between the manual and power steering! I always figured stick with manual to keep things cheep and simple.

Thanks again!
