Ever hear the story about the guy who goes to the Dr complaining that it hurt when he reached behind his head to scratch his back? The Dr replied 'then don't do that'. Just buy a lighter.

The fuse is burning out because the circuit is pulling more than 20 amps when you use it. The usual cause for this is a short somewhere. You can chase the short or don't use the lighter.

Replace your lighter element. If the fuse is opening because you are plugging something else into the socket then either the socket is bad or what you are connecting is overloading the system.

Have you looked inside it yet?

Because dimes and pennies are the perfect size to short a cigarette lighter socket, but still let you plug something into it (or only short it when you do).

If it only blows out when the lighter is pushed in (not an accessory), then probably the lighter element is shorted out.

If it blows out whenever you plug anything into it (like a cell phone charger), then most likely there's a short in the socket.

If it were a short in the wiring leading to the socket, then the fuse would blow as soon as the fuse was inserted, regardless of whether anything was inserted into the lighter socket.
