Anyone see the news story today about the chevy colbalt similar problem? The testimonials sound just like being on the rainy road in the outlook.

Your sounds like a pump, this thread deals with water splashing onto the pully system causing the belt to slip.

The power steering failed twice during dry weather in my 2007 Outlook. Both times I was traveling less than 20 mph and each time it returned in 30 seconds.
Once I was turning right and wound up on the island between the dual lanes since suddenly I had to use tremendous force to steer. The second time i was moving in slow traffic.

The engine kept running so the problem was isolated in the steering. Both times Saturn said there were no detectable problems.

Fortunately both failures were temporary and self corrected. What if I was going 75 and in the process of passing?

Any ideas on what would cause two 30 second failures in 54,000 miles? The mechanics at Saturn are clueless.

I just talk to a GM representative and following the recall for the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G6 and Pursuit for the failing power steering. GM is currently evaluating the need to recall the Saturn ION with that same problem. Everybody who have this problem should call GM and get registered:
GM 1-800-263-7854

n.b. I have a Saturn Ion 2004 and itís around $1000,00 to solve the problem.
Regards.

Hey all. So the protectors were put on my 07 Outlook and then they replaced the belt. Since then I have done fine in the rain. My warranty would have been up the end of this month and I expressed my concern to GM. They looked over my unusual service record and offered me a 1 year extension on my warranty for free. I hope I won't need it, but I feel better having it. My advice to any of you having this problem is to call GM and let them work with you and your service department. Get GM to document all your concerns. Good Luck!

My wife and I own a 2007 Outlook. We have previously experienced the steering issue when driving in rain. Last week, the wife had steering lock on her when making a right hand turn. She ended up in on-coming traffic lane. Luckily she was going slow and traffic stopped in time to prevent a head on collision. We experienced previous problems, waited for the new "design" inner fender skirts, paid out of pocket $400 to install in January, and still experience the same safety problem. I have been working with GM customer service and have two files on record with them. The Saturn master mechanic told me that the new fender skirts only have corrected 50% of the cars he has installed them on. He was not aware of any fan belt replacement bulletin (if anyone has the bulletin number I would like to have it), but did say that early on he has replaced belt tensioners hoping to eliminate the problem, but it has not. We love the car, except now the wife will not drive it in the rain. This last incident happened with just a wet road. I have had it happen on a trip where the belt slipped enough to stop charging the battery and the DIC flash a message to turn off all unnecessary accessories! This is a safety issue due to a still uncorrected design flaw. I am expecting a call from the assigned GM customer service person today. Meanwhile, the vehicle stays garaged if rain is in the forecast. Not exactly what I consider a workable solution on a $38,000 vehicle with 44,000 miles on it.

Technically the steering shouldn't "lock". Losing power steering assist should make steering more difficult but the wheels should still be able to turn. If the issue happens to you, grab the wheel with both hands and turn as hard as you can, the steering wheel and front wheels will move.

It's possible there are some inter-related problems here. My '07 Outlook recently had both the power steering pump *and* the steering rack replaced because the steering was locking up (completely unable to turn the steering wheel) at low speeds. When I went in for service we agreed that it was probably the pump, and replacing the pump improved the issue but did not eliminate it, so the GM technical support guys recommended to my service manager that we replace the rack also. I didn't receive any more detail than that, unfortunately.

Anyway, if other outlooks have a similar issue, then when the power steering fails (due to water on the belts), it is possible they could be completely unable to steer...

Davidsky, technically many things aren't supposed to happen, but in reality they do. To make a blank statement that, that shouldn't happen is nuts, yeah we all know it isn't supposed to happen, but who are you to say that the rack doesn't get something jammed in it or a gear snaps off inside the rack. The reality is if they say it wouldn't turn, if you weren't there to verify otherwise, it didn't turn. If you want to throw your two cents in, fine but don't tell people what they say happened didn't, otherwise you come off like every other wise ass tech at any dealership and/or mechanic shop when they talk to a woman, or any person they think they know more than. I've seen it and I like it just about as much as my wife does.

We recently had our Saturn Outlook XR transmission fully replaced at only 66k miles and a short few days within the Power teain warranty. I also had dealer which is Carr Cadillac GMC in Vancouver, WA where we purchased vehicle check steering column issue as it has been clicking and annoying but whats worse is it has on occassion locked up where you can no longer steer. Diagnosis was a bad bushing and i had to pay them $85 to tell me that even though it was in for a full transmission replacement. i had to have it owed in. This is a major safety concern and issue that the Carr dealer informed me GM is aware of but it would not be covered under Power Train and thus I was looking at a $1400 repair to replace column. I don't even know if thats what is causing it to "lock up". Needless to say this should have never have defaulted especially on a vehicle that is garage kept, never been off road and I am still stunned that GM would not cover this safety problem.

It locked up again today in a parking lot after backing up and my wife said she had to put car in park then reverse, park then reverse and then it finally released allowed car steering to move. Now im paying on a car still that since having transmission replaced a month ago that she is scared to drive this car.

Can you imagine if steering wheel locked up and you no longer had any steering going over a overpass or bridge...heck, anything.

Is there someone with GM customer care who can look into helping me get this fixed as this has to be a life safety issue and a faulty steering column or something thats causing this. I am not very happy to say the least especially after this happening again today...

Default Update: Steering locking up

Here is an update to my recent post regarding our beloved Saturn Outlook XR AWD

Thanks to my posts on several key GM forums I received a few responses from GM customer service regarding my issues and I must say thus far, it was a breath of fresh air to have several of the GM customer service reps make contact with me and show concern for my vehicle and the safety issues mentioned. When a car cannot steer that is a real problem and should not be at the helms of simply the vehicle owner's back or expense only as it reflects upon the name and quality product represented by a company such as General Motors. Failed steering in one of these Lambdas could be deadly on the road not only for the vehicle passengers but those on the road when it happens as its a fairly heavy vehicle.

So here is where I am with the vehicle since my post. GM has worked with me on having the Steering Column and bushings replaced and I can first tell you that no, its not being covered by GM exclusively but they are covering a huge cost of the repairs which I can at least say is not only the right thing to do in my eyes, but also I feel a fair offer considering I am now out of warranty. The vehicle is at the dealer and they found that the steering shaft is also in need of replacement as well. Ultimately, all I am seeking is to ensure my family and I are safe on the road with this vehicle and for those around us on the road to be as well and for vehicle to be corrected of these issues which are well documented on numerous sites as being a known safety and mechanical issue on the GM vehicles that are on this type of platform.

Ill update this posting once I obtain my vehicle back with the repairs made above that they have diagnosed as being the issue. There are several TSB's that can be found on these vehicles and some relate to corrective issues such as replacement of power steering pump, rack etc.

I look forward to picking up our Outlook and to find that the problem has been resolved.

Default Update: steering issues

Well, I received a call from dealer who is performing the work on our 2008 Saturn Outlook XR. After replacing the steering column and shaft / bushings as well I think, it still isnt corrected fully from what was shared to me and needs a replaced Steering gear as well. I had a approved GM co pay for the repair but now with the gear replacement also needing replaced to remedy the issue completely and allow my vehicle to be safe to drive...at least I hope, this comes with a price on top of what was already dagnosed and approved by GM to help over. Its additional money that I dont have and for repairs that are correlated to each other as obviously a design flaw or simly poor or defective initial parts.

I sure hope to hear a positive outcome back from dealer and GM as I'd like this story to be a happy ending. Id like to be WOW'ed and become a Raving Fan of GM, but time will tell.

I'll update this posting on alll forums I am on regarding this issue Ive had.

3/7/2013 Update:

Hello. Yes, Ive experienced the same issue and you can find my postings on it by searching my user name.

I just received my Outlook back today from the dealer's service dept after they had it since friday. To give you a summary of what it took to correct the issue for me, it was a defective steering column, steering shaft, bushings and the steering gear.

They did the prior replacements of the column and shaft and still had the clunk so they replaced the gear and i can tell you, it drives well now and steering is smooth with no clunking or popping....nothing. We are happy to have it working properly.

GM and their customer service team were also very prompt in communicating and following up with these issues and working with me to help get these repairs corectly completed and I would receive follow up calls from the service rep assigned to my case # created for me. Her name was Karren and I appreciate all of the follow through and in addition, I also feel I was treated fair by GM overall considering the repairs and cost that was incolved in replacing these parts.

I feel blessed and certainly appreciative overall as GM charged me a deductible on a goodwill which although was a personal financial imact to me on these costly repairs. Although I feel these parts shouldn't have gone out on such a high priced vehicle ( Lambda ) with only 66K, it was still a very appreciative and fair amount overall.

My only additional concern now is a occasional stability track light kicking on which decreases the acceleration and jerks the car. With the above parts replaced hopefully that was the issue on the stability track problem and that I will not see it occur again. I had my GM customer service rep, Karren, document it on my case # as well just in case I have that issue occur again. It too is well known on many forums to be a faulty issue on these vehicles.

Now, here's to seeing that this repair corrected the issue long term and I am hopeful it has.
