Mad A reputation thing I don't get

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to OldNuc again."

I was reading a thread and found a really helpful comment from Badger and clicked on 'add to reputation'. Then I ran across OldNuc's comment and felt that was helpful too, but got the above message.

Just don't get it. The system is always nagging us to reward excellence, but when I try there is some bureaucratic reason why I can't. What is going on here? Just because I added to a user's reputation once or twice before, I can't do it again? Or maybe I can only add to it once a week?

Hmmmm... more speculation.... maybe I have to add to 5 other people's reputations before adding to OldNuc's again?

It would be nice to know what the reputation points actually do for people.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the numbers for this reputation thing? I mean, how many points (or +1's) does it take to transition from a light to dark green square? And then to earn a second, or third, and so on?

Well, it's basically a way for members to know who is actually helpful in their contributions to the forum. Usually, a person with more rep is a "better" member. Most people don't give rep to some ass-clown who spouts nonsense like it's going out of style. The reason it asks you "to spread reputation" is to prevent people from making multiple accounts and spamming the reputation button to increase their main account's reputation as high as they want.

Think of it like an achievement in a video game. It doesn't really do anything, but some people will do anything to get as many achievement points as possible.

Exactly! Its in place to reward members for their contribution to the site.

I've always been confused by the "spread more reputation before giving more to UserX" also. If a member is helpful on a regular basis, why not allow it? Not to say it's something Charlie can fix... but it's a software issue.

At least on this site it seems for the most part the feature works and most don't abuse it. People with more reputation points are more helpful for the most part, with not a lot of exceptions that I've seen.

On a motorsports forum I visit they enabled this feature on within minutes all the "buddy system" people were sending PMs to "trade" reputation points. They could also give negative rep, and within a day or two people had huge positive and negative reps, all based on the politics and buddy system crap within the forum, The owner ended up turning off the feature within a few days.

Just curious... how can Charlie have only 2 green squares and Signmaster has 4 green squares when Charlie has a lot more posts? Are the green squares a reputation thing?

The squares are based on reputation, AFAIK on total rep points alone. Charlie should have massive rep for keeping the forums running!

If people gave you rep points constantly you could have a lot of squares but few posts. On the flip side if you post a lot and people only give rep now and then, you will still end up with a lot of rep points or squares.

I realize that I am nowhere near as helpful as some of the SF superstars like OldNuc, but it's kind of sad that with as many posts as I have that I only have one square. I feel so.... useless.
