2002 L-Series 3.0L Sedan
Default 2002 L300 Fuel Pump EZ access

Hey yall SaturnFans! I just wanted to share my recent experience with a fuel leak/smell from the rear of car. Fuel was definitly leaking as there was signs of fuel dripping of bottom of heat shield. I checked fuel filter and realized I pooped around neglecting it for too long.(black and gunky). After I replaced the filter, Fuel was now leaking even worse. leaving small puddles. DARNIT!
So time to drop the exhaust to get to the fuel tank. (Battery disconnected). I got the tank out and examined a crack in the in-nipple and a stretched out o-ring. I repaired the nipple, replaced the o-ring, cut out a whole under the back seat in the location of the pump for future EZ access!
I am not a licensed mechanic nor have I ever been. My discoveries and/or alterations that I am explaining are for entertainment purposes, and I dont reccomend anybody to attempt.

Since the fuel pressure was released before this process, I had to reset the car. By doing the 10 minute key on for 3 cycles technique. Also pump the pedal a bit to get the pressure back goin!

I realized that I had to look at your photograph upside down in order to have the correct orientation - or perhaps I was just too slow to figure it out when I first saw it. Thank you posting the picture!! It's tempting to do what you have done.

I've wondered about cutting out a section of the under-body as you did. My fuel pump has been in the car since it was first sold. It's not likely that I will cut out a hole from the body to reach the fuel pump, for a possible second replacement in the future, after the first replacement. If I ever replace this fuel pump, and the replacement proves to be as reliable as the original, then the car will probably reach the wrecking yard before the next fuel pump ever goes bad.

I have an 03 L300 with a bad fuel pump and was wondering if you had the measurements to make this access door?
Also, how did you replace the cut out piece and what materials did you use for sealing it up from fumes? Did you take additional photo's?

My 77 Rabbit had an access hole above its fuel pump. There was a formed sheet metal cover and gasket held by 3 screws.
A great idea unfortunately not included in modern cars...

Oh yeah, how did you cover the hole, the floor pan I would think does not allow fumes into the cabin. And god forbid fire in case of an accident, and explosion.
