The biggest problem with not changing your oil is that, while there is fresh oil in the pan, the oil contamination level keeps increasing as the oil is used but the bad stuff stays behind.
Then when the filter plugs, the bypass opens and all that gunk gets fed straight to your bearings. Bad juju. You probably have goo buildup in strange places inside the engine. Some of it will wash away with fresh oil, some won't and some will bake in place. About the only hope you have is frequent oil/filter changes although you could try using 1/2 qt of Dex III as a flush just before an oil change. Run engine to full & stable operating temp. Add 1/2 qt Dex III and run for 3-5 mins, then change the oil HOT. There is a risk that flushing the system will dislodge a chunk of gunk and plug a return gallery. Best results are on engines that don't look like the one in the pic.

I did my oil change today and since its cold and snowy it wasn't to fun. I went with a filter and oil from a local store just to get the first one out of the way quick and easy.
Filter: Fram High Mileage #HM3614 Oil: Quaker State Defy Oil drained like it should and had a little burnt smell to it. The filter came off with ease and not like it spent a few Upstate, NY winters on the car. Once removed I poured it out and again it seemed like a normal situation. As you can see in the picture my "White" filter wasn't white anymore and I had a little mess all over the place. I cleaned up what I could in the freezing cold and will do more cleaning over the next few oil changes and find out where my leak is coming from. The drain plug was nasty so that was cleaned up real nice and tossed on a new seal. My plan at the moment is to check my oil every 100 miles to see how much is being used. I'm going to do another oil/filter change at 500 miles. Then after that I will do a few more at 1,000 miles and by spring find that leak I have. About the leak: The only oddness about that is I had some oil on my firewall as if it was hitting by belt and being "slung" on the firewall. To be continued.. BTW..I can't get the picture to show up. I suck

The oil leak may be from the filter o-ring. If the old one "came off with ease" after 6 years, I'd suspect it wasn't installed tight enough. Give that filter the full 1/4 turn after contact with the rubber seal/housing.

Good job getting it changed!
Are you going to replace the PCV Valve? Also, how's the Air Filter, Plugs & Wires? Now would be a very good time to run Techron, Amsoil PI or Redline SI-1 in a tank of gas if you haven't in a while. ... '01 SL1 RIP. Found "Creampuff"! '00 SL2. 89 YO lady car. 20 oil changes 1st 33k miles. Now 62k miles. Penn. Ultra to keep "uncoked". Burns no oil.

I'm amazed. You best hope none of it built up around the timing chain tensioner.
In the case of my car that's what killed it. Sludge built up around it, made it seize and when the chain stretched naturally, it slipped off at start, at least that seems the logical explanation. I'd do a compression check too, personally. Knowing is important, it will probably burn more harshly. I'd be amazed if you don't have uneven cylinder compression now. ... PCV valve was changed a few months ago but now that you mentioned it I'll grab a new one today to go with the fresh oil change. I always did all the maintenance on time (not oil change). I did order a compression tester online so I'm waiting for that to show up.
I never had any problems with this car in the 10 years of owing it. Even all the lights in the car are original except one brake light (had a cop point that out). During the last 10 years the car was the better of the two in this relationship so now I'm trying to make up for it and show her I still love her, its not she got fat in 10 years, still weights the same 2,400lbs or so. Just have to see if shes pissed off or not.

My 94' SL2 went 40k without an oil change. It now burns a quart every 300 ish miles. Thats up from the 150 miles it was burning before i put some MMO in the oil. No noticeable sludge build up either inside the engine.

Not changing oil and filter and topping off is most likely one way to operating in severe conditions for an engine; a filter that's never replaced in several years would probably cause the oil to bypass the filter and run without filtering - the point where damage would be irreversible. In one sense, a quart of new oil every 1k miles is replacing 25% of the oil capacity while still using less than 75% of old oil since replenishing oil every 1k miles means the oldest oil was 4k miles old. Nothing wrong here except that the filter was never replaced. Extrapolating this unusual oil change or more correctly, oil replenishment interval would work if the oil filter were replaced every 5k miles or so. The filter is more important in this case of overlooking oil and filter replacement. While no one can guess when or if any real damage has occurred, replacing the oil and filter at recommended mileage intervals would be recommended. Any damage already done cannot be undone, only controlled at this point. At best, if no damage were done then just returning to regular oil and filter change intervals is recommended.
... *The CPS is the heart of the entire EFI system. No cps = dead EFI system* *There's more to a/c than just a few cans of refrigerant* *There's more to brakes than just replacing parts*

you basically changed the oil every 4500-5000 miles. its fine!! i would probaby put fresh oil and filter on it with 1qt of mmo when it uses a quart top it off then when it becomes 1qt low again replace the oil andf filter again and be done a decent dino oil like valvoline pennzoil ect ect can go 7500 miles head over to bitog to learn more.
