There are 2 of these , one on each side of the radiator on my 2004 Ion sedan.

Probably impact sensors if the radiator gets smashed in to activate the airbags, that's my guess, someone else probably knows better than I though

That was my thought also until I looked at my other Ion and it doesn't have them.
The car in the pic with the mystery items is an Ion 1 with an automatic trans and the car that doesn't have them is an Ion 2 with a manual trans.
There are little differences between the 2 cars,I'll check and see if I can find them mounted elsewhere.

Thanks guys for the info. I can't find them on the other car but I'm not that concerned about it now.
My initial concern was because I thought they might have been air bag sensors and the one on the drivers side was pointed up at a 45 degree angle,which I thought might be a concern but since its only a resistor I'm moving on with reassembling the nose.

The DRL resistors were part of a fix for DRL light socket problems in the first to second years of production. The later years had the resistors built in.

Where are "built in" resistors,car harness or headlight assembly ? Thanks for the info.

they're both 04s, so they neither should have the built in resistors. it sounds like your second ion was never "fixed".

I believe they were burning out bulbs and sockets. so, yeah, I would have a dealership confirm if the TSB applies to your second ion.
