1997 SL1
Wrench 97 SL1 Intermittent No Start

Hi everybody!

I searched the forums and did not find a thread with a problem like mine. My 97 SL1, manual transmission, has 227K miles and runs great but has recently developed a no-start condition. Occasionally (maybe 40% of the time) when I turn the key to start the engine...I get a click and that's it. The engine does not turn over. Sometimes it will turn over on the second attempt and start right up, sometimes it's the third attempt. Even on the rare occassions where it still has not started on the third attempt, if I wait for just a few more seconds (like, long enough to put on my seatbelt or release the handbrake) the car will start. In other words, it always eventually starts and it really doesn't leave me hanging for long, but I fear the problem may get worse and I may eventually be unable to start the car.

I originally suspected the starter and changed that out (car still had the original so it was probably due for a change anyway). Battery is brand new and fully charged. Double checked all cables and fuses...could not find any chaffed wires or signs of arcing. Everything looked good.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Thoughts?

Well, a replacement starter can fail too from inferior parts or just from normal wear and tear. If you are experienced in how starters work, you may be able to rebuild one. The main question to ask is what failed? Battery, battery cables, connections? Starter? Start circuit?

I'd suggest checking the cables as well.

After that, it seems that OOB failures of aftermarket parts appears to be all too common as more and more of them are outsourced. This video might help you to diagnose the problem?
