Rack and pinion catches when turning
I have a 2003 Ion and have read about the power steering motor problem. My issue is in the rack and pinion I think because when you turn the wheel to the right when sitting to park when you get to the initial turn off center the wheel locks up and you can feel a bad clunk in the left front. So I even raised the front end up to release the pressure on the front end and wheels,and when you turn the wheel back and forth simulating a turn you can feel the steering want to lock. I took the knuckle loose at the gear to ck the u-joint and it is ok. The u-joint at the steering column seems to be ok also when I spin the wheel disconnected it is free from binding. I guess what I am asking is has anyone replaced the rack for this binding and locking up problem? Thanks

update..............I replaced the rack and pinion and found that the pinion and gears in rack were binding off center. When I would try and turn the pinion in the vice you could feel the gears jamb and stick, not very safe if your driving and need to turn sudden but anyways that was the problem. I might add also this was the EASIEST rack and pinion to replace in the 30 years of working on cars!

what would you have to bleed? it's a manual steering rack.
... 2007 Saturn Ion 2 2003 Chevrolet venture lt trifecta dealer for the U.P. and WI. There is no two door ion. Proudly driving one of the last saturns produced before gm killed the brand.

All Ions have electric power steering. Nothing to bleed.
