Whirring noise and not starting
I have a 2003 Saturn Ion sedan.
On the way to work this morning the car started making a clicking noise which seemed to be correlated to acceleration. It would be steady at idle and increase frequency as I accelerated. When I pulled into the parking lot, it was much worse and I left the car on and stepped out to get a better chance to listen to it, it sounded like there was also some type of grinding noise. Now I went out to start the car and it will not. All i get is a whirring noise. The battery seems to be okay because the headlights do no dim when trying to start the car. Any idea what could have happened?

:facepalm: not the oil quality, the oil level.
sounds like you had a starter or engine failure, tow it to a reputable shop. ... 2007 Saturn Ion 2 2003 Chevrolet venture lt trifecta dealer for the U.P. and WI. There is no two door ion. Proudly driving one of the last saturns produced before gm killed the brand.

Did you double check the Oil Level yet? If it's good... suppose it might have been a failure with the Oil Pump. But be it Oil pressure or level I'd have figured you might have seen an Oil Warning Light if it was low enough.

The oil was very low, must have a leak. I live in a condo development so i'm not always in the same spot, so i must have missed a leak or something.
I added oil, still won't start. When trying to start i did notice a quiet tapping noise inside the top of the engine.

call around for prices on a gently used engine from an 03-04, sounds like you toasted yours
