So, was the manual syncromesh and the automatics planetary? Just curious...

The S-series manuals have angle cut forward gears with blocker rings and syncros for easy shifting. Reverse has straight cut gears.
The automatic has the same kind of gears with clutches instead of blockers and syncros. ... A lousy day in paradise is still a day in paradise.
