Tach needle won't go below 1,400 even when the engine is off. However hitting the steering wheel repeatedly inches it down. Any thoughts? This has been an issue since I bought the car 8 yrs ago.

When you turn the key "ON" does it move or stay at 1400?
When your car is warmed up and at idle, and you begin to drive, does the engine rev before the tach moves? ... 1996 SL2 5MT. 239KMs. Gone, but not forgotten. 2000 SW2 5MT. 133KMs. Gone, but not forgotten.

Mine does the same, I was told the gear is worn. When I tap the top of the dash the needle drops to the correct rev level when its on or off. My sister visiting me, thought I was patting the car like a dog (good boy).

Engine may rev a little before it moves. It's accurate above 1,400. It's almost like it gets stuck on its way back down.

Anyone have a broken or one that needs repair cluster they can take apart and let us know what gear is needed?
Mine is a daily driver and I don't want to have to let it sit while I pay over $4/gal for diesel waiting for a part that may not be found. Our clusters are getting old enough that it doesn't matter which one you switch too soon it will have the same issue.

No , Never resolved it. I did however find that turning the key to accessory will suck the needle to zero. But once started it hangs at about 1,400. Guess I'll just live with it. It's pretty minor
sorry I couldn't help
