1997 SL2
Wrench Idea for a turbo build.

Hey guys im new to the site and currently own a 1997 saturn sl2. Ive been doing alot of researching and **** trying to find out what would be the best thing to make this thing scream. I dotn want your stuff saying get another car cause i want to be origonal. But the ideal build for the stock internals is this.

DSM 4g63 Turbo manifold
DSM 14b turbo
Mopar 42lb injectors
Front mount intercooler
8lb psi wastegate

I need some help on what everybodys opinions are. cause i know that the ll04 twin cam is full aluminum block witch is great for heat dispersal and that it has Cast iron piston sleves. So the bottom end on these cars are pretty solid. Please shoot me some ideas on more stuff that i would need. I know how to do all the work myself but my main concern is engine management. ANy ideas?

You're going to need a lot more than that tiny list. Number one being another car to drive while this one is up on jackstands. Becasue that's where it will spend 95% of its life from the begining of this project and on. You're also going to need some sort of fuel control. The Saturn PCM wont do it.

A turbocharged S-Series may be fun for the short amount of time it spends on the road. But realistically, its a unrelaible money pit with no bottom.

And there is nothing original about having a turbo Saturn. A lot of people have done it. Including myself. And if I had to do it all over agian, I wouldn't.

What were the main reasons for the breakdowns? Was it all fuel related or what?

All component was made with the idea that they were going to be used with a 124hp engine. When the engine output is increased, the components start to fail. Transmission being one

You can make the differential stronger, good. What about rest of the transmission gears?

In addition to the parts you listed, minimal, you'll be looking at

Fuel pump
Aftermarket Fuel control
Aftermarket Ignition control
Pipings from air intake, to turbo, to intercooler, to throttle body
Cone air filter
Rubber or silicone hoses
Hose clamps, lots.
Entire exhaust system, downpipe, cat, cat back, mufflers
2 or 3 bar map sensor
some form of boost control, be it electronic, manual, or your computer
Blow Off Valve
Aftermarket slim fan
Stronger clutch kit
Oil feed line
Oil return line
Coolant lines to the turbo if you want watercool
Boost gauge
Wideband 02 gauge

And the list of parts will only grow bigger and bigger.

Your car will be up on jackstands for months, if not years until you figure out exactly what you need to buy, and how to put them all together. You will spend thousands for parts and countless hours of time. At the end, you might not even have a running car to show for.

You want to do something original, great. Problem is, you'll run into a LOT of original problems with no where to turn for help, other than yourself and your knowledge.

Default Re: Idea for a turbo build.

almost half of the stuff you listed is not necessary.
further more, months-years on jack stands...seriously...

the stock ignition system can handle 450whp...
the stock fuel pump will handle 300whp....

you want a stand alone, MegaSquirt, to control at least the fuel. Ignition helps but is not really necessary unless your goals are higher up there.

If he wants more than 200whp then he is already too far ahead in his planning. For goals north of that he needs a forged bottom end. Forged rods and pistons. At this point decide if you want more than 300whp. If so, send the block to Golden Eagle and have it re-sleeved. north of 300whp the cylinders risk shifting and blowing head gaskets.

recap

stock to 200whp > stock engine, stock clutch, bolt on turbo stuffs, run MS and control at least fuel

200+whp > forged rods, forged pistons, necessary machine work, ACT street disc (equivalent or greater), MS controlling at least fuel.

300+whp > Golden Eagle block, forged goodies, head work, ACT 6 puk, MS controlling fuel and spark.

on all builds a welded dif pin is a good idea. I would go with a LSD on anything above 300whp though.

this is as nice as I am going to be about it. try searching some more. if you want good info, check out sixthsphere. but be advised, do NOT post this, or any other dumb question over there because you will get flamed, butt hurt and likely banned when you cry about it. the info is there, search for it and READ. they dont take kindly to OMG I WANNA TURBO MY SATURN< SPOON FEED ME n00bs there.

Ok thanks for everyone information but no need to be rude about it. Im far from a novice when it comes the auto industry and fabricating and building and servicing engines. I simply asked for everyone's opinions on what i would need. not to be spoon fed on how to do it. Jerkoff.
