Dizzy 96 sl2, we replaced many parts and still have idle issues..

96 SL2 1.9 DOHC- We replaced the head gasket, intake gasket, exhaust gasket, exhaust flange, TPS, fuel pressure regulator, PCV valve, air filter, spark plugs, the belt, belt tension, valve cover gasket, and the battery. The car starts and whenever you put it in park or neutral it idles up to 2000 then drops back down to anywhere from 500-800. If you are stopped at a light and you let your foot off the brake it will go on its own and get up to 25mph without giving it any gas. We had the purge solenoid hoses mixed up and finally have them on right. Right before we fixed the hoses and replaced the throttle position sensor, the rpms would drop really low and sometimes it would even stall while in park. I think there might be a vacuum leak somewhere and we just can’t seem to find it. There is a bolt broken off in the exhaust manifold but we are unable to get it out. Would this cause the problem or is this only going to increase the noise? I don't know what else to try....??

If you put this in the s-series section you will get more responses. Check the vacuum booster hose and see if that is hooked up.

Where is that hose? How do I move this? Or do I retype it?

You either PM a Moderator to move it, or retype it in the S-Series forums.

The engine in the S-Series is totally different than our engines in our L-Series cars. Have no idea what you are talking about.

this might seem like a long shot, but are you sure you have a thermostat in your car and that the motor is operating within the specified temps.

My car used to idle about 1200-1500 even after driving it for a while.

Here is why I suggest that: While taking a long trip this weekend, on the way home I noticed the coolant temp was barely above the "C". That is too cold for these cars to continualy operatate. The ECU will keep the mixture too rich, etc.

I suspected that the previous owner had removed the thermostat. Yesterday, I bought a replacement T-stat from Napa. When I took the water outlet off the block, sure-enough there was no T-stat.

After I replaced the T-stat, the engine is operating at the correct temp and the car does not idle fast anymore.

Really guys? Do you read the thread AT ALL before you post?

Myself and another member said right away that this is the L-Series forum and you arent going to get many (if any) responses here. You need to post in the S-Series forum, or go through the member list of the site and private message a Moderator to move the thread completely.

The L-Series and S-Series are two totally different beasts with completely different powertrains, built on completely different platforms.
