LOL
I only go fast when passing. When I learned to pass I was taught to drop down a gear or two, floor it and then pull out, keep accelerating till your clear, pull back in and slow down. Well this XR will go from 50 to 100 in 4th and it only takes about 10 seconds. That is about how long it takes to pass two cars or an 18 wheeler. That means I get the pass done in less than 1/4 mile which is far safer than doing it at 70 MPH and taking 3/4 mile. I do back off when I hit the ton mark 'cause that's fast enough. I have enough experience at speeds way over 100 that I fell pretty comfortable doing it. Kids, don't try this at home LOL ... Summer mileage; Before I left our summer home in the White Mountains of Arizona, my average MPG was 26.8 and 34 MPH. Filled up day before heading to SoCal.
Mileage for first 300 miles was 29.2. Then I hit a traffic blockade. Both lanes were crawling along from 0-5 mph with periods of 0 lasting 3-10 minutes. This went on for over 2 1/2 hours, and about 10-12 miles. Turned out to be highway repairs where they had pieces of the roadbed cut out and dug out to a depth of 4-5 feet. One lane open. I could not believe that they were doing this repair work on a holiday Point is that this kicked my MPG for that last tank of gas down to 21.1. That hurts, but not as much as turning an 8 hour trip into 10+ Some of you see this type of commute every day/week and the low mileage to go with it is just part of the norm. I can see how a HyBrid with electric motors can be a huge advantage to those that have to drive in stop and go traffic every day. Till now, I thought these electric HyBrids to be a waste of money. Not sure I will have one in the near future, but those of you that have to drive stop and go commute should look at them as a real alternative to a gas only vehicle. Nice to be home again. ... 3 weeks into the Aura and pulling 35 on the open hwy (cruise on @ 60-65 mph) and 23 or so on back roads. Average so far (by the computer) is 29. Almost 500 miles on a tank of gas.

Most of the Saturn reports show a good increase in MPG once you pass about 8000 miles, the normal brake in period. You are seeing 4 banger MPG now. Looks like you got a really good engine.

I think the Aura is hampered by its relatively heavy weight. The 4 is working harder to overcome the extra weight of the Aura. The car is likely, although I don't know for sure, geared differently. The primary advantage of the 4 cylinder is lower maintenance costs. The timing chain engine, coupled with fewer moving parts works to its advantage in that regard. You still made a good buy.

New aura 2.4. First full tank 27.5; second tank 29; cum average = 28.3. DIC says 27.7 for same 515 mile interval. Driving is ~ 60% hiway, 40% around town.
Now, we'll be getting 'winter gas', and I expect 'll get lower mileage.

Closing in on 4K miles and mpg has been a steady average of 29 (according to DIC); seeing 40 on the open road now.
I have to say the 2.4/ 6sp is a pretty impressive package! ![]() ... 2009 Aura XE 2003 Vue AWD 3.0 2000 SL2 5spd 1996 SL1 Auto Former Saturns: 1999 SW2 5spd 1997 SL1 5spd (1st Saturn!) 1994 SL2 5spd

I turned my BMW 335i in last week so I've finally got the Aura full time. I'm a couple more days away from putting my first full tank in that's completely mine... and by that I mean not tainted by my wife's lead foot driving habits.
With her driving 100% in the city in our 09 2.4L/6-speed Aura XR the DIC was indicating 24.5-25 mpg. At 2200 miles still on the factory fill oil with me driving so far it's been right about 28.5 to 29 mpg city indicated by the DIC. I have still yet to put it through a road trip, or compare the DIC to the actual mileage calculated at the pump. Still, I'm very happy if I'm actually getting 28 or 29 in the city. That's about as much as I was hoping for. If I get 38-40 highway then there's really nothing more I could ask for. And it could still get better with more miles.

If you keep the driving at 50 mph in 6th on flat and level roadway and no traffic or stops, you might get 38-40. ANyone claiming 38-40 MPG commute traffic or cruising the highway at 80 is using one of Al Gores Fuzzy Math calculators. Whatever you get, I hope you are enjoying the car. It's not a Beemer, but it only cost half as much. ... Phaeton Driver says "Check your oil every week, the V6's don't notify you when they are low" 07 Aura XR 20K+ miles 1928 Ford/Dodge Streetrod

Finally I managed to get my first full tank of gas driven about 90-95% myself. My wife has a lead foot so I've been waiting to see what I could manage if I drove the majority of the tank myself. I'm still only at 2500 miles and I changed to synthetic oil about halfway through this oil change. I also aired up the tires to 33 psi cold which has definitely somewhat negatively affected the ride but I'm thinking the mpg increase might be worth it.
End result with 90% my driving, 10% my lead-footed wife, 95% city, 5% highway, was 27.8 mpg indicated by the driver info center and 28.1 mpg using the real world miles driven divided by gallons to fill up method. I'm pretty impressed! I've owned a car that was a good bit more powerful and got about 10% better economy on the same city route, but it was also a manual transmission and required premium. It was also a tad bit smaller I think (06 Audi A4). Maybe as the miles/wear-in continues and I manage to get a tank of gas 100% my own, plus I learn the car's mannerisms a little better (for example this car coasts much more efficiently than my last car so I can let off way earlier when approaching a red light), I might be able to hit 30mpg in the city.

Good job as to the 28 MPG. I have just started working every day and have to drive about 14 miles on city streets, red lights, traffic, etc. I am getting just a hair over 20 MPG driving carefully and not trying to out run every Bimmer and Lexus in the stop light grand prix. I haven't run a full tank yet and am going bu the DIC average (2007's don't have instant MPG readouts) So your 28 is looking like a substantial improvement. I'll check mine when I can get a whole tank of comuting from start to finish. I hope it will stay over 20. ...
