Default Code Question

I have been getting an Insp 0 message when I shut the car off

I think it is in regards to oil. I changed the oil however it is still saying
Insp 0

Any ideas?

Like Larry said. The engine doesn't "know" that you've changed its oil so the oil life monitor must be reset manually (I don't know of any car that resets the oil life monitor automatically).

1) sit in driver's seat
2) do NOT insert key
3) press and hold stalk on odometer
4) read display
5) give self congratulatory hi-five to significant other

With the car off, press the odo reset button on the dash until it changes to the oil life left screen.

The oil life monitor software factors in a lot of things besides mileage. It also factors in time, number of times started, number of times not brought up to operating temperature, etc. GM spent millions of dollars on the technology and it works pretty well. When properly reset after an oil change, it should display 16000 or 17000 kms. If you started the car up and drove the car non-stop around the world a couple of times, you might actually be able to get the full 16000 or 17000 kms out of it before it's time for another oil change. Numerous short trips don't give the oil a chance to get up to optimum operating temperature and will drastically cut those numbers down.

I'd say that you're due for an oil change, but I'd try to get it for free from the dealership where you bought the car from, since it's w-a-y too early and the car's likely been sitting on their lot for a year or two. It's worth a shot, anyway.

Thanks for the info. The car has been on the lot for awhile. It was their last Astra before they closed their doors for good. I won't bother trying to get a free oil change as the next closest dealer is too far away. I'm just going to do it myself. Does any one know where in the Toronto area I can get a filter for it other than a dealer?

Here's a link to the procedure. Anyone that carries Purolator should be able to help you out (part number is L15839). The filter isn't as rare as you'd think, since it also fits the 1.6L engines found in 2008+ Waves and Aveos. Still, best to get a price from the dealer for comparison. Some people have reported quite a difference in price, while some have said there was almost no difference.

So since its the same as the Aveo/Wave, I should be able to get it from any GM dealer basically? I'll call around. Again thanks for all the info!

The system takes into account time since the last oil change as well. It's was probably just sitting on the lot too long.
