Fisker, Tata, and DeLorean Said to be Interested in Former Delaware Saturn Plant

Quote:
Andrew Eder from the Delaware News Journal: At least three auto companies have toured the empty Boxwood Road assembly plant near Newport in a bid by the governor's economic development team to revive the state's moribund manufacturing sector. Delaware is competing against suitors in Michigan and other Midwestern states where the American auto industry has cut back production leaving dozens of abandoned auto plants. Access to foreign markets through the Port of Wilmington and a commitment to green technology could help Delaware revive a 62-year legacy of building cars that ended when General Motors closed Boxwood in July.

2008 SKY Red Line
Default Re: Fisker, Tata, and DeLorean Said to be Interested in Former Delaware Saturn Plant

The current Delorean Motor Company is a tiny operation in (aptly) Humble, Texas. It has virtually nothing to do with the original DeLorean company or JZD himself (RIP). It belongs to Steve Wynne and does restorations, sells recycled and new parts, etc. to the DeLorean car "enthusiasts". The original compant went banko and died years ago. A nice little niche market, but little more than that. According to a business search, they have a total of 23 employees top to bottom and an annual revenue in the "10 to 25 million dollar bracket". Based on the reputed 6,500 DeLoreans still alive to some extent or other, that represents anywhere from about $1500 to $4k average annual spending per owner. In view of the cost of these unique parts and the high cost of restorations - look at the labor alone - that is not unreasonable. Actual profit is obviously considerably lower. So they don't have any capitol to speak of.

It would be a cold day in hell before a company like that - with by the way no new automobile design capability - could possibly take on the Wilmington plant or a revival of the Kappas - let alone the cost of any "customizing". It's just a cheap attention getting ploy (and it worked - though what it really gained except to invite ridicule to a good little company I have no idea). Amusing and a delightful pipe dream for some, but dead from the ground up. Joke over, forget it and move on.

Also note that while there are relatively few people in the population (i.e. the potential Kappa market) that remember DeLorean with some affection, even the marketability of the name is higly dubious. You would have to sell a lot of Kappa to a lot of people to even break even on the intital investment, let alone operating costs. I sympathize with those with an emotional attachment, but "Delorean" is not going make that happen that. I am not being negative, just realistic.
