2005 VUE 3.5L
Default 05 Sunroof Stuck Open

Well last night we were driving to a friends house and I went to slide open the sunroof and it wouldn't fully open. Then it dawns on my wife to tell me that it's been like that for a week now

I started flipping the hinge portion of the switch to move the sunroof up and down, which worked two times and then got stuck open. So now my roof is open ( how it opens at an angle)

I checked the fuses and they looked good. I re-started the car to no avail. Any more tips, is there a different fuse besides the one under the hood and inside the fron passenger, or am I hosed and going to have to fork over some dough at the stealer-ship?

2005 Vue AWD 3.5 37K miles

Thanks,

Ollie

Ollie ... I've attached electrical schematic and sunroof description for 05 Vue.

There are other troubleshooting tables ... let me know if you'd like those.

According to schematic the sunroof is powered through a 30 amp power window circuit breaker and then a dedicated 20 amp fuse.

I don't see any other fuses but these diagrams are not always 100% accurate.

Perhaps there's a connector near the switch with corroded contacts or simply worked loose?!?

Good luck and please advise if you need the troubleshooting tables.

Wow! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You Far2grumpy! More information than I expected. I may take it to the dealership because i don't want to screw up the headliner.

Thanks,

Ollie

Just curious, isn't there a manual close knob either at the switch or towards the rear of the headliner? Most cars with factory power sunroofs have some way to close the sun/moon roof manually with a screw driver in case of problems like yours.

I don't know - I'll have a look. The dealers are closed today and I'm going out of town tomorrow. I'd like to shut it so I don't end up with bigger problems.

My wife just told me that the switch worked opposite before it just failed. What I mean by that was when you pushed to close the roof, it would open, and vise-a-versa. Nothing like feeding me pieces of infomation.

Well I'm in the dealership. They think it may be a wire that got wrapped up in the motor or a track alignment issue. So far I'm at $109 for the first hour - Saturns gotta eat too.

Four years and 37K miles and the warranty is 3 years 36K miles - go figure

Thanks for all your help.

Here's what happened. They took off the headliner and found that there was no wiring miscues. They determined that there is something going on with the computer in the car that has the sunroofs timing off. He mentioned that the sunroof has a timer similar to wipers. I'm not sure if he was refering to the limit switch or what. Anyway he is replacing the whole assembly and motor which will be $1200 bucks They said they've never seen this before and don't have the parts. At least he closed the roof for me.

Saturn of Burnsville offered me, seeing as the car is just out of warranty, that I only have to pay $300. I think that's rare of a service dept., and I feel they didn't really have to do that. Hats off to the guys at Suturn of Burnsville, MN. Paying $1200 to fix an accessory is not my idea of stimulating the economy.

$1200 is the price of new sunroff, actually more! Usually an $800 dealer option. If that was the case, I'll just silicon it closed forever. Still $300 is hefty to fix- hopefully never happens again.

It must be a wife thing. Last week our sunroof wouldn't slide open. It only decends and stops before the slide. It does open to the vent position though. I was fiddling with it trying to see which buttons worked and what it's range of motion was when my wife came out to ask what I was doing. It turns out it's been doing that for a couple of days now.

I've emailed Far2Grumpy to request the troubleshooting table he referred to and I've downloaded the PDF's he's already posted in hopes of repairing this myself as we're going on vacation in mid-July and I'd kind of like to be able to use it again. At least ours does close properly so it doesn't worry me.

I've had a chance to review the PDFs supplied by Far2Grumpy and it suggests that my sunroof may be hitting an obstruction and causing the motor to stop due to an overload.

Does anyone have any information on how to remove the glass? I can raise the sunroof to the vent position. From what I've researched about the orginal instalation proceedures for a sunroof, the glass is one of the last things to go in so I presume there must be a way to get it out again so I can inspect the rails for obstructions. I can't feel anything with my finger so I'll need to do a visual inspection.

Also, does anyone have mechanical diagrams for this unit?

BTW. I'm assuming that it's a Webasta Hollandia 700 model sunroof in everyone's car. I bought my 2005 Vue used so it's possible that it's an aftermarket installation. The warranty sheet that I found in the glove compartment is dated February of 2005 - shortly after the car was built and is in the name of SSI The Queensway so I'm guessing this is a dealer-installed sunroof and will be covered by the Saturn warranty if I can't fix it myself?

Any opinions?

LEGOManiac ... I've attached a sunroof mechanical drawing and several diagnostic charts ... the charts might refer to other documents, so get in touch if you need.

What make and model of factory installed sunroof does the Vue come with?

I called my local dealership and they say it's an aftermarket sunroof that I have, even though the sunroof receipt is attributed to "Saturn Saab Issuzu The Queensway". I had been researching sunroofs to try to figure out my problem and learned that most manufacturers are using 3rd party sunroof products so I figured that this is how it get's installed (locally on an as-needed basis)

Am I wrong about this? Should GM's extended warranty be covering it?
