Question Wheel opinions for my 98 SL2?

So I just finally got my valve body replaced after the guy I recently bought it from had his station do it and I didn't wind up having to do any of the dirty work. I got the part off of ebay which was only $150 and it seems to have worked so hopefully the shaft nut isn't loose or anything.

To the main point, I've found some nice deals on wheels on craigslist. Before diving into buying wheels, I figured I'd ask you guys what your opinions were first. I'm thinking a 16x7 at the moment, but I'm not sure if that would look better than if I went up to a 17. I don't want to have to get super expensive tires, and at the same time I don't want the car's wheels to look to small. I'm definitely gonna go with at least a 5-7 spoke wheel either single or double spoke doesn't really matter to me, but I think double spoke looks a little nicer.

This is really the first car that I'm doing anything to so I'm new to this and I'm not going to race and don't really care about weight or anything. I just want it to come off appealing at a cheap price because my budget isn't huge and get good gas mileage.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

You're off to a good start. My personal preference is 16" wheels, as they just look like they fit the car well. 17"s look good too, but just start to push into that "look at my big wheels" look, but not obnoxiously so. Either will look good, just gotta figure out what look you like, and see what deals come along.

You may want to take weight into consideration as well, depending on if you have any intentions of being competitive with the car, or just want to have some fun with it. A decent guide for what is a "good" weight for a wheel is a lb per inch. So if you get 16lb 16" wheels, that's pretty good. Not the best, but there are a LOT of heavier wheels than that. Even a lb or two over that isn't terrible. If you can get under that, then great. For most people, though, a little bit more sturdy, heavier wheel isn't a bad thing at all.

If you get 17's your going to need low profile tires which are $$ and then more $$$ to have mounted.

16's are a good inbetween size. and will allow you to do suspension upgrades later on.

look on www.tirerack.com and www.tires.com and use their interactive wheel systems to "see" 16 and 17 inch wheels on your car. also you can see what 205/50-16 and 205/45-17 tires are available and prices.

I use 17 by 7 they make the car look funny without a drop to it cause my tires are low profile. Im going for a slight drop more profile and wider tire next time around. they cost about $200 per tire and extra money to have them mounted. Anyhow I cant complain it gives me more accleration grip and stopping power plus they are so light. Id consider how well yr local roads are, weather, and your plans for suspension when you make a choice. Also is it a daily driver show car drag car or street racer. I use to think people who got nice rims for there hoopty were idiots but I swear life is better with good wheels and tires regardless wether they cost more then your car or not.

Oh yah btw I got mine for $450 for new tires and rims from a girl who had them for car shows and scratched one. Those car club people are good to know. I agree with Eric though. I went to tire rack and made sure they matched up first. They might look good and rub in turns if not.

I dont think you can drop the car with 17's with out rubbing.

Any wider and your going to need spacers.

17's actually hurt acceleration because it changes the driving ratios Nothing noticable obviously unless your autoX. The trade off though is better grip!

you can lower it with 17x7 wheels and 205/45-17 tires and nothing rubs. no spacers are needed with 7 inch wide 35-40 offset wheels. "driving ratios" ?? what are you talking about. a 205/45-17 is only 0.05 inch taller than a 195/60-15 so the gearing would be about the same. the 17 inch wheel would most likely be heavier than a 15 and that hurts acceleration. and braking. and handling.

i got some prime 15 x 8 chrome rims with 205 50 15 bfgoodrich g-force sport tires. i dont think theres any one i know who could out corner me with those on and warmed up. i want some steel wheel like stocks but 15 x 8 because there lighter than the huge chunks of chrome i got now. the thing is no one makes them and 4 to 5 lug adapters cost $300+. if i could get the adapters id switch to some old chevy truck wheels with the same tires. any one wanna loan me $400?
