Default 96 Saturn SL1 Exhaust System

I recently purchased my first car. I really know nothing about cars. I live in MO, where inspections are required and took the car for inspection. It didn't pass because of exhaust leaks.

I attached some pictures/links. The muffler needs replaced. Do you think any of the other parts need replaced?

How much will the repair/labor cost do you think?

THANKS, JEFF

Your telling me that would not pass?? It really looks fine. Just the muffler is a little rusted. Every thing else looks A Okay. Muffler is not much, if you take it to a shop, maybe like $150 total.. (For a cheap muffler and labor..)

From the pics I would say you need a muffler and strap.

New muffler and strap. they failed you for the 2 holes in the muffler. No leaks under the car. After you get the muffler replaced have a buddy put his hand over the exhaust and you can check for any more leaks. You will hear them. Tell your buddy to use a ball of rags to restrict the exhaust, its hot.

Don't let the condition of the pipes scare you, from what i see they are the stainless steel pipes that came on the car and if all possible you want to keep using them.

You didn't need a muffler, as you can see in the first pic it isn't leaking any exhaust. You should have been able to get away with just the new hanger. OG Saturn mufflers are a stainless steel blend, and they also have two layers to the outer shell. The outermost one can rust right off and not affect the muffler at all, there is another layer underneath. I would just put the hanger on it and take the muffler back.
