1997 SL
Default 13 years

Well, I've had this car 13.3 years.
All was well for the first 13. (except that I was driving with a bad ECTS until 2008)

Then:
Headliner failed. Fixing it now.
Wheel bearings- front- replaced last week.
Now front brake rebuild looms. Leaking caliper. Also, the rotors are ratty looking.

Radiator in 2008. Clutch in 2008.
New struts last fall.
New water pump last fall (pre-emptive)
Fixed leaking valve cover seal last fall

BUT
Alternator and starter still original! Exhaust still original. Axles still OK (thanks to my Grandma-like driving style, and glacial acceleration the mighty SOHC provides).

All in all, not bad for 138,000 miles. From reading this forum, these are typical Saturn S issues.

But "13" might have some unluckiness

So, I have a lot of "fun" to look forward to next year?

13 is my SC2's lucky year; rescued it from another year of sitting and rotting in the dirt.

...
...Wait, what, I actually won that eBay auction?
Guess I now (12/2008) own a 1998 SL2, silver 5 spd :p
And now (7/2010), a Craigslist 1997 SC2 5 spd

Now that you mention it, my Satty is on its third radiator. It happened to pop within the thirteenth year of use (might have been close to its birthday, not sure).

Same with the battery. I was supposed to be good on it till next year (bought the car in 2007 with a brand spankin new battery), but it started to go to crap on me (ironically in the car's 13th year of use), so what can ya do. -shrug-

2008 Astra XR
Default Re: 13 years

i have a 99 SL1 built in November '98. it has 160 km.
i have replaced the following-
rotors (twice), calipers, brakes (twice), exhaust manifold gasket, crank sensor, exhaust manifold exhaust pipe, brake lines, water pump, wheel cylinders, muffler hanger/band (twice), ects, battery, tires, tranny fluid + filter (twice), change the oil + filter every 4 months, hoses (once), serpentine belt (twice), coolant flush (twice).
not bad, in my opinion.
if the tranny or motor were to fail, then it's to the boneyard for the saturn.

First thought.. lightbulbs! Oops, wrong thread.

Mike, now that you mention it.. my engine took a dump at @13 yrs. Didn't make that correlation till you mentioned it. After all I've put into it had better get another 13! I know that's wishful thinking.

My '84 is still running strong but I could have probably bought several Sats from just a couple of it's "routine" maintenance bills.
