Well, the opening statement started with "sedan wouldn't start one day so we changed the fuel filter and it starts but..." along with a new member would suggest starting with the coolant sensor. You're correct about the combo fuel filter/regulator and fetchitfido did suggest a pressure check. This covers two possible issues.
