Timing chains also need to be replaced. They (in theory) make noise before they break or skip teeth. This allows you to change it before bad things happen. A belt gives no warning. This is why you change them at specified intervals. Warning - Saab for the same engine calls for a 100,000km (63,000mi) timing belt change interval. I wouldn't stretch this out too far.
