Is the "plunger" going in and out normally? Are you seeing any arcing / sparking when it pops? If it's "shorting", you'd have the opposite effect, that is, the brake lights would be on when you aren't pressing the pedal. Maybe the contacts inside the switch are just shot, or corroded (which, in all likelihood, means new switch time anyway). Look also for any external short, that is, any place where either wire could be contacting a ground outside the switch. Deal with that first.

If it is the switch, I would think you could find an aftermarket. Can't say for sure, but it doesn't seem to be the kind of part that, quality-wise, would compel you to go OEM (like with, say, a PCV valve).
