Re: message to Charlie

I received a PM recently from someone trying to sell OBD II scanners. The only emails I ever get from Saturnfans are PM notifications and a happy birthday greeting. I don't think your email address...

Re: Thermostat Issue?

Based on a sample size of 1 (my 2002 SOHC), what you are observing is normal. My car runs at about 5/16 of the gauge in the summer and at 1/4 in the winter. Heat is adequate. The third gen gauge...

Re: Front End 'Growl" When Turning Right -- Mount?

Your Saturn engine has four mounts:
1. Torque axis mount (upper mount). This is the one at the passenger end of the engine, visible from above.
2. Transaxle mount. Under the transaxle.
3. Upper...

Re: How smooth are manual trannies and clutches?

Mine shifts just fine also. Moderate throws, but accurate. Third gens have a softer clutch pedal. Some like it, some don't.

Re: Reoccurring p037 and p410 codes

In the SOHC engine, the injected air has to flow through four small holes in the head. These holes get plugged up and the air can't reach the exhaust stream, setting the code. If you did not drill...

Re: New S-Series Owner - 2002 SL2

Note that you have the composite cam cover which is prone to warping. Check that it is still flat when it is removed for gasket swap.

Re: New S-Series Owner - 2002 SL2

Those are some tired looking plugs. The oil is often from a leaking cam cover gasket. Were the plug wells full of oil? If so, plan on changing the gasket soon.

Re: Tire rubbing strut when braking

What tire size are you running? I have 15" steel wheels on my SC1 with 195/60R-15 tires and never had a rubbing issue.

Re: Noise

^+1. Sounds like a motor mount issue. A failed dogbone mount can make the same noise as the upper mount. Check them all.

Re: Sales Call Interaction

Guess this might make me that last Saturnfan still driving one in Houston! Glad yours found what sounds like a good home. Mine will go to its final resting place when I'm through with it in the not...

Re: Please help. Car acts up after reaching normal operating temp.

Another possibility is a clogged catalytic converter. When mine plugged, the car would run great until the temperature needle got close to normal operating temperature, after which is ran horribly...

Re: Time for me to say goodbye to my SL2 soon . . .

Glad you got it fixed. I've had P0410 and P0446 active all summer, but choose to ignore them for now. Car is inspected through April 2018, and I expect I'll retire it permanently before then.

Re: 2001 SL2 w/automatic- chirping noise from oil pan bell housing area

I'm going way out on a limb here, but I have experienced a situation with another make of car where the PCV system had a malfunction which allowed the vacuum level in the crankcase get pulled down so...

Re: No power to air pump

Power to the air pump is present for only 30 - 60 seconds after cold start when the system is working properly.

There is a Saturnfans member named Richpin who has a bunch of videos on YouTube, including one on how to diagnose the secondary air injection system. It is actually a rather simple system, but there...

Re: She Survived

Mine stayed high and dry also, except for some water in the trunk from leaks due to old age. Gave me a good excuse to clean out the trunk and inflate the spare tire.

Re: 96 sl1 battery light on and off lights brighten

Your statement is very odd: "lights brighten when battery light comes on". This is the exact opposite of what one would expect. The battery light coming on indicates system voltage is below a...

Re: Highmile. End of the road?

You can't give up yet - someone has to put a million miles on one of these cars. As OldNuc said, the LCA to cradle connection is a weak point.

Re: Hard to start, fuel filter/regulator?

I had the same issue and had been starting my car for years as if it were a "97 to get around it. Once the FPR started leaking recently, I had to replace it. Now it fires right up regardless of how...

Re: 2001 Sl1 with 210K miles cross country trip prep

I recently completed a 1000 mile round trip in my 293k mile SC1 and got 40 mpg going 70 with the a/c on and the fuel filter dripping! Something is not right with your car.

Or you can get fancy and bend one out of 1/8" OD hydraulic tubing.

Re: Strange noise near fuel tank: happens before car is turned on

Trace that line and see where it goes. I think it is the suction line for the purge system which is part of the evap control system. There is a purge valve which when commanded open by the PCM,...
